"Tennoheika Banzai!"
-Traditional salutation of respect for the Emperor of Japan

The Emperor of Japan has died.

News of the death came as a shock to many within and without Japan, for whilst the Emperor had become more withdrawn as of late, there were no indications from the Palace that he was anything but the picture of health. Furthermore, he had only been Emperor for less than three years. Only after his death did the Palace announce that the Emperor had been terminally ill for some time, and that preparations had been made for his death.

The Saiki Emperor (his posthumous name, for after death the Emperor takes on the name of his era- in his case, the Saiki era) had a short reign, and little power over Japan during it, as has been the tradition for most of Japan's Emperors. One of the major changes of the period has been the rewriting of the Constitution to permit the eldest child of the Emperor, female or male, to ascend to the throne. Thus, minutes after his death, Crown Princess Sakurako was summoned and formally presented with the Yasakani no Magatama and a replica of the Kusanagi no Tsurugi, two of the Three Sacred Treasures of Japan. With this act, Sakurako's ascension to the Chrysanthemum Throne has begun.

Only the ninth reigning female monarch in Japanese history, Unlike her father, Sakurako risks becoming possibly the most powerful Japanese monarch for a very long time. Although the Emperor's official role is as ceremonial figurehead, Sakurako's role as just a princess has given her great leeway; she now possesses great unofficial power through a web of political and commercial alliances, years of diplomatic experience and a strong swell of popular support. Through this, Sakurako has managed to make herself valuable to the real powers in Japan- the Diet- and by playing various factions against each other and supporting the rise of allies into key positions. Although such bases are shifting and never reliable, Sakurako has nonetheless managed to exert major influence over the Japanese government for a long time. How her enthronement will affect this is uncertain- strengthening it in some ways, perhaps, but weakening it in others.

Now a series of ceremonies await Sakurako as she ascends to the Throne. As is expected, she has sent invitations to many world leaders, inviting them to attend her enthronement.

The Federation and the UN both have received these invitations, permitting its leaders and a small entourage to attend the ceremonies in Japan and to stay after to discuss matters with the new Emperor- a trip of at least a few days.

Chosen Option: Attend the Enthronement

Yes, of course we will attend! We would be delighted to offer our congratulations to the new Emperor of Japan.

Enthronement. Federation leaders and a handpicked number of others will be permitted into Japan to witness the Enthronement. The UN have also been invited as well; this is a chance for roleplay primarily, but also potentially for the exchange of information, making of deals, and starting fights.
