Drones

Drones

Drones are cutting-edge technology reverse-engineered from captured Brother plans. Each drone is a self-contained floating platform, controlled via a special headset called a RDS Headset. The RDS Headset costs 2 RP and can be incorporated into any helmet, but cannot be taken alongside a SENTINEL headset.

Anyone possessing an RDS Headset may control a single Drone. If the possessor also has the Drone Programming (Int) skill they can simultaneously control a number of Drones equal to their Intelligence Bonus. All Drones act off of their controller's Initiative.

Ordering Drones

Commands

A Controller can order a single Drone as a free action. A controller can also send commands to all drones as a half. The orders do not have to be identical. A controller cannot send commands if he or she is stunned, helpless, or not in control of their actions (fleeing in fear, failing a WP test whilst on fire etc). The commands are as follows:

Command Effect Duration
Attack Target The controller designates a target for the Drone to attack. The Drone will attack the target (or move into range to attack) with equipped weapons. The controller may specify rate of fire and which weapons to use, as well as simple extra instructions such as 'always take aim actions' or 'move within point blank range'. The drone's default attack pattern is to use all weapons at the highest RoF setting possible. Until target is dead or given new orders
Defend Target The controller designates a target for the Drone to defend. The Drone will move as close as possible to the target and attempt to absorb any attacks made against it. Until given new orders
Move The Drone moves to a certain location at top speed unless speed specified. The location does not need to be specified exactly- 'move four metres north' works just as well as 'Go down that corridor and keep going until it meets a dead end'. Until instructions executed
Use Equipment The Drone uses a piece of equipment it has as specified by the controller. Use the Drone's characteristics for tests where appropriate. Until action completed
Change Mode Changes between the Drone's current Mode. Until changed again

Modes

Modes determine how a Drone operates whenever it is not executing an order. All Drones have a handful of Modes. They all possess the Follow and Standby Modes, and depending on their programming can possess extra Modes.

Mode Effect
Follow The Drone will follow the controller, moving adjacent if possible and moving at top speed. The default Mode.
Task The Drone is set a task that is to be repeated endlessly until recalled. Examples would be 'Repair damage' or 'Heal injured'.
Standby The Drone stays in place, shutting down unnecessary systems and lowering the energy use. It can be "woken up" with a command, and needs a turn to activate fully. Standby Mode sets in automatically if the Drone has been idle for more than an hour.
Combat The Drone follows the controller, engaging any hostile targets. Default combat parameters and target preferences can be set.
Guard The Drone will be set to protect the controller, engaging any that threaten them. Specific parameters and target preferences can be set.
Scout The Drone will gather information on the area around the controller automatically, up to a specific range set by the controller. Can also be used to scout specific coordinates.
Sentry The Drone will safeguard a certain area, engaging any that threatens the area. Specific parameters and target preferences can be set.
Watch The Drone conceals itself if possible and monitors the specified area, providing any intelligence it gains.

Programming

Before deployment, a Drone can be programmed with a suite of skills, talents and Modes.
The Drone is capable of having a total of skills and talents equal to the Intelligence Bonus of the programmer.
The Drone is also capable of having a total of Modes equal to the Intelligence Bonus of the programmer, including Follow and Standby.

These limits can be improved or increased depending on the hardware of the Drone.

Drone Characteristics and Parts

Characteristics

All Drones, before their parts are configured, start with the following Characteristic Line:

WS BS Strength Toughness Agility Intelligence Perception Willpower Fellowship
0 0 10 10 20 20 20 - -

Parts

All Drones consist of six parts: a Chassis, 1-4 Equipment Slots, a Propulsion system, a Battery, a Sensor Package and a Relay system. The Chassis determines the hit chance of each part, as well as the armor values of the Chassis, Propulsion, Battery, Sensors and Relay.

Chassis

The Chassis is the main hull of the Drone, including the armored shell that protects the Drone's CPU and other sensitive hardware. All other parts attach to the Chassis.

The Chassis decides the following things: the hit tables of the Drone, the AP values of everything but the equipment slots, the amount of equipment slots and their size, the Drone's cost, the Drone's wounds, and the bonuses to Characteristics the Drone possesses.

Recon Chassis

The Recon Chassis is designed for fast, light Drones designed mainly for gathering data. It relies primarily on speed to defend itself as its armor is negligible and cannot carry weapons.

Propulsion

The Drone Propulsion system is what keeps the Drone afloat and allows it to move. It is generally positioned to the rear or on the underside of the drone.

Drones by default possess a VS-D1 Propulsion System. All Propulsion systems have an effect on the Drone's Agility and may offer other benefits. All Propulsion systems have the benefit of removing any agility penalties from size. All systems use up a certain amount of energy every minute (10 rounds).

Drones can sustain a height max of 2m easily, but can temporarily put on a burst of energy that can lift them to a height equal to their Run speed. this height lasts for 2 rounds, and cannot be done again for 30 minutes.

System Name Agility Effect Special Effects Energy Consumption (Per minute) RP Cost
VS-D1 +0 Default 1 EP Free
VS-D2 +10 - 2 EP 1 RP
NG-SD1 +10 +30 to Silent Move tests 3 EP 2 RP
NG-ED1 +10 Hard Target Talent 3 EP 2 RP
NG-HD1 +0 Auto-Stabilizer Trait 3 EP 2 RP

Battery

The Drone Battery is what powers the Drone's systems. It is generally positioned in the middle of the drone, with most of the battery concealed by armor.

Drones by default possess a D-E1 Lite Battery. All Battery systems provide a number of EP (Energy Points) that are depleted as systems draw power from it, most notably propulsion and some energy weapons. Some Propulsion systems may have effects on Agility.

System Name Agility Effect Special Effects EP RP Cost
D-E1 Lite - Default 60 EP Free
D-E1 Standard - - 100 EP 1 RP
D-P1 Lite - - 720 EP 2 RP
D-P1 Standard -10 Hard Target Talent 1440 EP 2 RP

Sensor

The Drone Sensor provides the Drone with information regarding its surroundings. It is generally positioned at the front of the drone, visible as camera eyes or visors.

Drones by default possess the SiSo System. Sensor Systems can affect BS and Perception, and may have other special effects.

System Name BS Effect Perception Effect Special Effects RP Cost
SiSo System - - Default Free
SiSo 360 - +10 Reroll Awareness 1 RP
HARoS-D +10 - - 1 RP
3S Sensor Net +5 +5 +5 bonus from Aim actions 2 RP

Relay

The Drone Relay provides the Drone with the ability to send and receive data from its controller. It is positioned on the top surface of the drone usually as antennae or the like.

Drones by default possess the T-UP System. Relay systems can provide special effects to the Drone as well as the controller, as well have a maximum signal range.

All relay systems allow the controller to see and hear Drone's sight/audio data via miniature screens.

System Name Controller Effects Drone Effects Signal Range RP Cost
T-UP System - - 5km Free
T-UP Enhanced - Drone can use Controller's Perception/Awareness skill in place of its own 5km 1 RP
N-10 Link System May command two drones with a single free action Drone can use controller's Intelligence in place of its own 10km 1 RP
N-Hub Network May command all drones with a single free action Drones can use other Drones' Perception/Awareness in place of its own, can use controller's Intelligence 2 RP

Equipment Slots

All Drones have a number of equipment slots. The slots typically hang under the carriage of the Drone Chassis or within.

Not all slots are equal. Slots and equipment fall into three categories sorted from smallest to largest: Small, Medium, and Large. A larger slot can carry smaller-size equipment, but obviously not larger.

Whatever many slots a Drone possesses, each Drone has a weight limit that cannot be surpassed. Unless otherwise specified, equipment attached to a Drone is Drone-specific and cannot be taken off and used by other personnel.

If an attack scores a hit on a Drone Equipment slot that does damage, the Drone does not lose any wounds but the equipment is destroyed. Equipment costs are factored into the Drone's basic RP and do not need to be purchased again.
