Gendo S Meeting

[18:19] <AdEvaGM> [There were five people in the room, sitting at the conference table. At the far end opposite the door was Commander Ikari; to his left, Dr. Yui Ikari; to his right, VC Leon Thomas; sitting next to Thomas was Colonel Amatore-DeForest.-
[18:21] <AdEvaGM> [Opposite Commander Ikari was Dr. Barzilai Surov, who had just entered. With strangely deliberate movements he pulled the chair back and sat down. Yui failed to meet his eye; she looked away towards Gendo instead.-
[18:22] <AdEvaGM> ["One more person left." Said Gendo. The room was silent at this.-
[18:22] <AdEvaGM> [Minutes ticked by.-
[18:23] <AdEvaGM> [Eventually, the door opened once again, the silhouette of Captain Terence Savage standing in the frame. Crouching down, he rather awkwardly slid into the room, but remained standing; the chairs were too small for his bulk. He peered down at Surov. "Oh, it's you, Doctor Surov. So they didn't shoot you after all?"-
[18:24] <AdEvaGM> ["Little good it would have done them to do so in any case, Subject #20335." Said Surov calmly.-
[18:24] <AdEvaGM> ["With all due respect, sir, I prefer to be called Terence."-
[18:25] <AdEvaGM> [There was a muttered sound of disgust from Gendo's end of the table.-
[18:25] <AdEvaGM> [Surov waved a hand dismissively and turned back towards Gendo.-
[18:26] <AdEvaGM> ["Why do you do that?" Asked Yui, glaring at Surov, now. "Refer to him with a number instead of a name?"-
[18:29] <AdEvaGM> [Surov stared back, his eyes unmoving. "That is all he is to me. There is no sense in hiding that attitude." He folded his hands together neatly on the table. "For example, cloaking it in the pretenses of family…"-
[18:29] <AdEvaGM> [Yui flushed, her right hand balling into a fist. "How d-"-
[18:29] <AdEvaGM> ["That's enough." Said Gendo sternly. "We have an agenda here and I will not waste time on quibbles."-
[18:29] <AdEvaGM> ["R-Right." Murmured Yui, abashed.-
[18:31] <AdEvaGM> ["Is this about the recent events, sir? Regarding de Pteres?" Asked Thomas.-
[18:31] <AdEvaGM> [Gendo nodded. "That is correct. Let me be frank. I personally do not care one way or another is de Pteres is found guilty or innocent. It doesn't affect his role."-
[18:33] <AdEvaGM> ["That said, I doubt he is actually guilty. Savage." Gendo turned towards Terence. "During the inter-branch competition, I tasked you to investigate de Pteres. Specifically I asked you to provoke him. I wanted you to develop an understanding of his personality and beliefs. Would you like to report your findings to the room?"-
[18:39] <AdEvaGM> ["Of course." Said Terence, nodding shortly. "Sera de Pteres. The discussion we had centred around how he felt the Thunderdome was a waste of time."-
[18:39] <AdEvaGM> ["A waste of time? Why?" Asked Thomas, frowning.-
[18:47] <AdEvaGM> ["He felt it was irresponsible." Said Terence. "He wanted the pilots together more often, but not to fight each other. He felt it was meaningless, since the Angels would not use weapons to earn their victory."-
[18:47] <AdEvaGM> ["… But we're a military organisation." Said Thomas flatly. "Wargames are an essential part of the process."-
[18:48] <AdEvaGM> ["Still, I think I understand what he means." Said Marianne. "There's only so much actual training can do to prepare a pilot when it comes to angel warfare. They use mental attacks, illusions, not just brute strength."-
[18:50] <AdEvaGM> ["But the wargames also serve to form tactics and strengthen the esprit d'corps of a unit." Said Thomas. "And you'd think he'd realise how important that is in regards to the Parisian squad…"-
[18:52] <AdEvaGM> ["Yes, I agree." Said Marianne with a sigh. "Yanmei still lacks the critical confidence she needs to lead- and besides that, there's a good deal of friction between at the very least Yanmei and Aline. Not even Colonel Lachapelle was really able to do much more than suppress it."-
[18:52] <AdEvaGM> ["In any case, continue, Savage." Said Gendo.-
[18:52] <AdEvaGM> [Terence nodded. "The discussion became an argument, especially since I was deliberately goading him." He flashed a cheeky grin.-
[18:57] <AdEvaGM> ["The main underpinning of his point of view was that he felt that he should have had a greater degree of control, regarding the organisation of the pilots. At the very least, he was indignant that he had to be 'handed' opportunities to bring them together."-
[19:00] <AdEvaGM> ["Ultimately, he felt that it was critical that the pilots 'reclaim' their lives from NERV, an organisation that has used lies to control its pilots from the very beginning- an organisation that he could no longer trust."-
[19:01] <AdEvaGM> [There was an uncomfortable silence at these words, interrupted by a snort of irritation.-
[19:03] <AdEvaGM> ["From the very beginning," Muttered Thomas, "I suspected shit like this would happen. See- this is what happens when you use children instead of soldiers. Would you get someone like Guillory bitching about this sort of thing? He understands the relationship between commander and commanded."-
[19:07] <AdEvaGM> ["You're correct, VC." Said Marianne. "But I also feel that maybe Sera has a point as well. The level of manipulation that NERV uses goes above and beyond that of a regular military."-
[19:07] <AdEvaGM> ["Only the level of manipulation needed that is required." Said Gendo.-
[19:10] <AdEvaGM> ["Besides," Said Yui. "They're necessary for the pilots' own sakes as well. The truth would hurt them- it's for their own protection…"-
[19:10] <AdEvaGM> ["Liar." Said Surov quietly.-
[19:10] <AdEvaGM> ["I- what did you say?!" Snapped Yui furiously.-
[19:13] <AdEvaGM> ["You deny them that information because you do not trust anyone but yourselves to possess it." Said Surov. "Their protection is meaningless; the true goal is that they adhere to the course laid out for them by you and your 'superior judgement'."-
[19:13] <AdEvaGM> [Silence, then-
[19:15] <AdEvaGM> ["You vile snake!" Yui shot to her feet, trembling with anger. "I can't listen to this-"-
[19:15] <AdEvaGM> ["Then don't." Said Surov simply, looking back towards Gendo.-
[19:16] <AdEvaGM> ["Sit down, Yui." Said Gendo curtly. With a look of fury mingled with hurt, she settled back into her seat.-
[19:16] <AdEvaGM> [Thomas cleared his throat. "You were saying, Captain Savage?"-
[19:18] <AdEvaGM> [Terence had watched the exchange with mild interest at best- now again called upon to speak, he nodded. "After a little more goading, de Pteres lost his temper and stormed off, ending the conversation and leaving me to care for Pilot Akagi, who has a wicked sweet tooth."-
[19:20] <AdEvaGM> ["She isn't alone in that." Said Marianne with a smile. "I've seen some of the bills from Thunderdome when it came to the restaurant order-"-
[19:20] <AdEvaGM> ["Is it true you ordered four caramel fudge sundaes to your room after your final defeat, Colonel?" Asked Terence, his tone polite, his eyes sparkling with mischief.-
[19:20] <AdEvaGM> ["Be quiet, Captain."-
[19:20] <AdEvaGM> ["Yes, ma'am."-
[19:22] <AdEvaGM> [Gendo's brow furrowed above his glasses. "Savage, remain on topic. Can you provide your character assessment regarding de Pteres?"-
[19:29] <AdEvaGM> ["Of course. In my opinion, de Pteres would be best described as 'misunderstood'." Said Terence. "It's obvious that he has some good ideas and his own way of bringing them about, but he has great trouble communicating them to anyone with whom he lacks an established rapport. His tone when discussing these things can be charitably described as imperious."-
[19:30] <AdEvaGM> [There were a few groans from the audience. Marianne seemed particularly weary. "I've come close to punishing him for disrespect many, many times in the past twelve months, it's true."-
[19:31] <AdEvaGM> [Gendo stared down at his hands. "Continue."-
[19:35] <AdEvaGM> ["It's not the first time I've seen this sort of thing, to be honest. Silas Caine and he were astonishingly alike in that regard." Said Terence. "Caine felt as though he was 'superior' to the comings and goings of mortal men; he deeply resented being dragged down into the midst of events he felt were beneath him. I guess it's part of the burden of being a genius…"-
[19:35] <AdEvaGM> ["Would you describe de Pteres as a genius?" Asked Thomas.-
[19:40] <AdEvaGM> ["I would." Said Terence. "He has that same attitude that Master Azariah possessed; the attitude of being capable- even deserving- of taking the world and shaping it, or in de Pteres' case, preserving it. All three of them- Master Azariah, Silas, and de Pteres- weren't satisfied with leaving things in the hands of lessers, or those they feel are lessers; they feel as though they know best. Whether that's true or not, I cannot say." Said Terence slowly, rubbing his chin. "Their own individual paradigms are out of synch with the wider accepted paradigms. They are either pariahs or trailblazers. None of them are simply 'satisifed'."-
[19:42] <AdEvaGM> ["The Caine blood is thick in all of them." Said Yui quietly.-
[19:48] <AdEvaGM> ["Elisha was definitely possessed of a unique ambition and way of thinking." Said Gendo. "But he was also exceedingly arrogant, dismissive of those he felt were inferior to him- which was nearly everyone- and deeply manipulative. Much of our own manipulations- the manipulations of NERV- are his design, not of our own doing." Gendo frowned. "Elisha was a divisive person- one either hated him or loved him, and there was little room for middle ground. If our theory- that de Pteres has picked up yet more of Elisha's traits- is true, then of course he hates his feeling of powerlessness…"-
[19:48] <AdEvaGM> ["He needs to know his place." Growled Thomas.-
[19:54] <AdEvaGM> ["Agreed, Vice-Commander." Said Gendo sharply, "as ultimately the situation is under our control and will remain that way. Our destinies are locked, now; there can be no deviation." He clasped his hands together and leaned forward, his glasses catching the sole halogen light in the room. "He is -not- Elisha Caine, despite the contents of his soul, nor the genetics of his body. He has not the power to change anything at this point."-
[19:54] <AdEvaGM> ["Someone clearly considers him important, though." Said Marianne.-
[19:56] <AdEvaGM> ["Yes." Said Gendo, frowning. "Someone has gone to great lengths to frame Sera de Pteres, when they could have simply killed him. Although, considering that he has died before, whoever did this probably did not think the effort was worth it- the destruction of the replacement clones is not widely known."-
[19:57] <AdEvaGM> [There was silence.-
[19:57] <AdEvaGM> ["… When did that happen?" Asked Marianne, her tone shocked.-
[19:57] <AdEvaGM> [Gendo waved a hand dismissively. "Irrelevant. The true interest I have in this case has nothing to do with de Pteres' safety or his reputation. It has to do with something he said."-
[19:58] <AdEvaGM> ["What's that?" Asked Thomas.-
[19:58] <AdEvaGM> ["He mentioned seeing Ramliel." Said Gendo.-
[19:58] <AdEvaGM> ["But that's impossible. Ramliel's dead." Said Marianne incredulously. "Besides, we would've detected it, a dirty great Angel in our city-"-
[19:59] <AdEvaGM> ["It was human-scale." Said Gendo.-
[19:59] <AdEvaGM> ["So? It couldn't literally be Ramliel." Said Yui. "We possess Ramliel, when we took the Cradle of Adam from Azariah."-
[20:00] <AdEvaGM> ["Indeed." Said Gendo. "To power the Cradle of Adam, Azariah placed Ramliel's soul within that body and grafted it into his own flesh. Once Azariah was killed, Adam was reclaimed and with it, Ramliel's soul."-
[20:00] <AdEvaGM> ["… At least, that is what I first thought. My intent was to remove Ramliel's soul and perform a Division Failsafe operation upon it."-
[20:00] <AdEvaGM> ["A division failsafe-?" Asked Marianne.-
[20:01] <AdEvaGM> ["When you divide an AT Field into two halves." Said Surov casually.-
[20:05] <AdEvaGM> [The rest of the table turned towards him. He continued. "Entities with powerful inherent AT Fields, such as Lilith, Adam or an Angel can retain consciousness and great levels of power so long as their AT Field is whole. Their AT Fields require focus points- corporeal manifestations. For Angels, this is their cores. When their cores are destroyed, their AT Fields collapse into an embryonic form, but they are entirely conscious nevertheless. If this embryonic field is removed and placed inside another focus point- a body, for example- then the AT Field will recrystallise- although now slaved to the body, which allows for certain precautions, such as stasis."-
[20:08] <AdEvaGM> ["Using such an entity is dangerous, as very often their consciousness is capable of overpowering anything with which it shares a link." Said Surov. His voice wasn't exactly a monotone, but it was even and measured- a little too much so. "The exception being an E-Type AT Field, which naturally places any 'passenger' Fields into a dormant or semi-dormant state. Which is not to say such an entity couldn't overpower an E-Type AT Field, of course. But their dormancy relies on the host Field granting them consciousness."-
[20:11] <AdEvaGM> ["There is only one other way of ensuring dormancy in a powerful AT Field- Division Failsafe. Divide the AT Field into two equal halves, which destroys the consciousness. The products are rendered dormant and passive unless activated in some way- for example, by placing a half into a body with a brain, at which point the activated half will begin to redevelop its missing half." Said Surov. "Memory and identity are lost until the halves are reunited."-
[20:12] <AdEvaGM> [Gendo nodded. "Yes. This is what I intended to do to Ramliel."-
[20:12] <AdEvaGM> ["However, when I investigated Adam, I found that it had already been done."-
[20:12] <AdEvaGM> [There was dead silence.-
[20:12] <AdEvaGM> ["… Where's the other half, Gendo?" Asked Yui softly.-
[20:13] <AdEvaGM> ["I do not know, although I suspect that de Pteres' apparition may be what we're looking for." He turned his eyes towards Surov. "Do you know, Surov?"-
[20:13] <AdEvaGM> ["I cannot help you." Said Surov nonchalantly. "I was never permitted to handle Ramliel's AT Field."-
[20:14] <AdEvaGM> ["You have no idea where the other half is?"-
[20:15] <AdEvaGM> ["I have ideas, yes." Said Surov. "A logical argument might conclude that the missing half of Ramliel's AT Field fell into the hands of the Liberated Nations. It was not implanted into an Iron Disciple or Iron Paladin by the hands of me or my team."-
[20:15] <AdEvaGM> ["Hm." Gendo frowned.-
[20:17] <AdEvaGM> ["In any case, security forces must remain on alert for a Ramliel-like entity. Captain Savage, I want you patrolling the streets from now on. Find ways to personally cover any VIPs."-
[20:17] <AdEvaGM> ["Yes, sir."-
[20:17] <AdEvaGM> ["Meeting dismissed." Gendo stood, followed by the others. Thomas, Marianne and Yui began to file out- Surov remained behind.-
[20:17] <AdEvaGM> ["Did you have something to say, Surov?"-
[20:18] <AdEvaGM> ["I felt it pertinent to note that I recognised the one killed at Blanche. He was a spy."-
[20:18] <AdEvaGM> ["A spy?" Gendo's face was impassive. "I see… Anything else?"-
[20:18] <AdEvaGM> [Surov shook his head, and a second later he too was gone.-
[20:19] <AdEvaGM> ["…" Gendo pushed his glasses up along the bridge of his nose, and moved to follow the others.]
