Lagos Nigeria September 2000

[14:09] <Minaplo> [September 13, 2000.-
[14:18] <Minaplo> [A cacophony of hooting car horns filled the streets of Lagos this morning.-
[14:27] <Minaplo> [Yejide walked along the sidewalk, and like most others she seemed not to hear the deafening sound coming from the traffic jam. In fact, it seemed like she was lost in thought.-
[14:36] <Minaplo> [She didn't envy the people in the jam. She'd had a car once, a not entirely reliable one; even when she'd had a job the car had been a huge drain, both due to repair costs- which seemed to be rising- and petrol costs… Which also seemed to be rising.-
[14:41] <Minaplo> [30 naira for a litre. Five years ago it'd been half that! Ridiculous.-
[14:43] <Minaplo> [Nevertheless, she'd been lucky; the school had been pretty close, within walking distance. On the other hand, she wasn't sure if her job interview had gone as well as she'd liked…-
[14:45] <Minaplo> [Not that that was a particularly new situation.-
[14:49] <Minaplo> [She wove around a streetside vendor, his portable barbeque sizzling with chunks of chicken, fish and beef; he was selling suya. The nutty, distinctive smell of peanut oil was wafting around the air, alongside the unmistakeable tang of chili peppers. Several waiting commuters were staring at the man with a look that mixed hunger and dislike into one sad expression. They knew the moment the man was done with his next batch of suya, he would start making his rounds.-
[14:50] <Minaplo> [And they would buy it, and dislike him a little more.-
[14:50] <Minaplo> [Perhaps it was his unending smile.-
[14:52] <Minaplo> [Yejide had no such concerns, of course. As sad as it was her day's events had all but come to an end. Having an empty schedule had been almost refreshing at first, but it quickly became hollow. All there was to do now was to buy groceries, walk home, make more letters and lament her dwindling savings.-
[14:53] <Minaplo> [There was nothing to suggest, really, that September 13 would be any different to any other day.-
[15:19] <Minaplo> [Yejide dropped into a grocery store on the way home- and there she found a familiar face.-
