Tactics

Tactics are powerful abilities that Commanders can use on their subordinate Hordes to give them impressive bonuses.

Horde Armies

Horde Armies
Hordes represent masses of weaker units acting as a single entity, with a single block of characteristics, skills and talents. Most Hordes are part of an 'army'.
An Army is just a collection of Hordes that are linked together, acting at the same time. The composition of an Army is usually permanent and chosen before battles. 'Army' is a generic term for any organised group of Hordes, even if that group is more properly a Navy or an Air Force.
Once a Horde is put into an Army, it always counts as being part of that Army and any abilities that would affect the whole Army affect the Horde.
Commanders and Horde Leaders
All Hordes may be outfitted with a single Horde Leader. This Leader provides bonuses to the Horde, and may activate Tactics for that Horde. The Leader also travels as part of the Horde.
An Army, on the other hand, may also possess a single Commander. Commanders must have the Great Leader talent, but they can act as Horde Leaders for every Horde in the army, and may activate tactics that affect the entire Army, as well as tactics that affect just an individual. They also provide bonuses to all Hordes in the Army. A Commander is also attached to a single Horde in that Army, like a Horde Leader.
A Horde thus can have two leaders at any given time: a Horde Leader, and an Army Commander. They may benefit from tactics from either leader, but may only benefit from one Horde Bonus at any given time.
If a Horde Leader or a Commander is stunned, knocked unconscious, rendered helpless or killed, then any bonuses they provide, including sustained tactics, instantly end.

Mechanics of a Tactic

Basic Details
Every Tactic has the following field: an Action Cost, a Skill Test, a Sustain Cost, Keywords, any extra restrictions, an effect, and finally, special notes.
Action Cost refers to which Action the one declaring the Tactic must expend to activate the Formation. Usually, it is a Full, Half or Reaction.
Skill Test refers to which Skill the one declaring the Tactic must use to activate the Formation.
Sustain Cost refers to which Action the one declaring the Tactic must expend to sustain the Tactic. If the Tactic is not one which is sustained, this entry will be blank.
Keywords refers to a collection of keywords that are applied to Tactic. These words are simple markers that may carry special rules.
Extra Restrictions refers to special parameters which must be met before a Tactic can be used. For example, it might require the Horde to be in cover.
Effect refers to the specific effects the Tactic puts in place.
Special Notes refers to any miscellaneous additions that might modify how the Tactic works. This includes incidental bonuses to the test.
Keywords
Tactics can have the following Keywords: Army, Defensive, Horde, Offensive, Ploy, Stance, Support.
The 'Army' Keyword refers to Tactics that, when used, may affect all Hordes in the Army. Do note that they only affect all Hordes if the Commander is using the Tactic; a Horde Leader's tactics only ever affect his specific horde.
The 'Horde' Keyword refers to Tactics that may only ever affect a single Horde.
The "Defensive' Keyword refers to Tactics that are primarily defensive in nature, such as increasing AP or applying penalties to hit the Hordes.
The 'Offensive' Keyword refers to Tactics that are primarily Offensive in nature, such as increasing the damage dealt by a Horde.
The 'Ploy' Keyword refers to Tactics that primarily affect enemy Hordes, applying negative modifiers to them.
The 'Stance' Keyword means that a Horde may only benefit from a single Tactic with this Keyword at any given time. i.e. a Horde may only ever benefit from a single Stance Tactic at once.
The 'Support' Keyword refers to Tactics that may modify or make things easier for a Horde but aren't straight defensive or offensive buffs.

Offensive Tactics

Ambuscade

The target takes a -5 penalty to their Awareness test per 2 DoS on the activation test. If the target fails the test by 3 DoF or more, they are Stunned instead.

Harass

Until the start of your next turn, if the Horde lands an attack on a Surprised target, that target must test Willpower. On a failure, they take a -10 penalty to all tests for one round. Multiple instances of harass do not stack, but extend the penalty time.

The target takes a -5 penalty to their Willpower test per 2 DoS on the activation test. If the target fails the test by 3 DoF or more, then the target's penalty lasts for an extra round.

Repel Attackers

The affected Horde may, once the enemy attack has been resolved, instantly perform a standard melee attack of its own against the attacker. This attack is resolved in the normal fashion, with melee specialist attacks. This does not prevent the Horde from making any attacks on its own turn.

If you gain 4 or more DoS on the activating test, then you may make the Repel Attackers attack before the enemy's own attack.
