Persona Character Creation

Natural Qualities

Persona Character creation is very similar to OW's, but how one determines their characteristics is different.

Characteristics Part One: Starting

Everyone at the very start of their character generation begins with a flat 20 in every characteristic. Record this at the top of your sheet under your character's name, age, country of origin and region of origin.

Example: William Redspring is a newly-minted PC. He has yet to decide his arcana or generate his characteristics, so his Characteristics are all flat 20s. So far his sheet looks like this:

Characteristics Part Two: Arcana

Once your Characteristics have been recorded, you must select three Arcanae to represent your character's personality and innate talent. One Arcana will be your Primary Arcana, and two will be your Secondaries. This is replicated in more detail here. Record your Primary Arcana and Secondary Arcana on your sheet under your character's name and age and above their Characteristics.

Upon selecting a specific Arcana, you automatically gain the listed amount to your base Characteristic Bonuses.

Primary Arcana selections give you all the Characteristic Bonuses listed; Secondary Arcana give you half. If you have a choice of two +5s, you choose one; if you have a choice of a +10, it becomes a +5 instead.

Every Arcana offers a number of Aptitudes. All Aptitudes from your Arcanae chosen are recorded down in your character sheet.

Example: William Redspring chooses Lovers as his Primary Arcana, boosting his Fellowship Score to 30. As his Secondaries he selects Justice and Fortune. From Justice he has a choice of either +5 Perception or +5 Intelligence; he chooses the +5 Intelligence, raising his Intelligence Score to 25. That leaves Fortune. Ordinarily, Fortune would allow him to add +10 to any Characteristic, but as it's a Secondary, he is only permitted to add +5 to any Characteristic instead. He puts it into Agility, granting him an Agility score of 25. So far his sheet looks like this.

Characteristics Part Three: Random Rolls

Once Arcana bonuses have been allocated, it's time to generate the characteristics themselves. Roll 9 1d10s, and assign the results to whatever characteristic you like. If the average of all 9 dice is below 5, reroll. Finally, you may reroll any 1 1d10, but the result stands.

Example: It's time for William Redspring to generate his characteristics. He rolls 9 1d10s, and gets a 10, 10, 8, 8, 7, 5, 3, 1 and 1. He takes the last 1 and rerolls it; he comes up with a 7. Thus, he can add a 10, 10, 8, 8, 7, 7, 5, 3 and 1 to his characteristics. He allocates a 10 to Fellowship, a 10 to Intelligence, an 8 to Agility, 8 to Willpower, 7 to Perception, 7 to BS, 5 to Toughness, 3 to Strength and 1 to WS. So far his sheet looks like this.

Characteristics Part Four: Point Allocations

Nearly done! This is the last step. Every player starts with 20 points they may allocate freely to any characteristic. They cannot allocate more than 10 points to one characteristic, and they cannot push the characteristic over 40 in this manner. After this, you will have successfully finished your characteristic generation!

Example: William Redspring has finished rolling his characteristics and now it's time to apply the points. He cannot apply any to Fellowship, as it's maxed out. Instead he applies 5 to Intelligence, bringing it up to 40 and reducing his Point Pool to 15. He applies 3 points to Perception, bringing it up to 30 and reducing his Point Pool to 12; he applies another 3 to BS, bringing it up to 30 and reducing his Point Pool to 9; he applies 7 to Agility, bringing it up to 40 and reducing his Point Pool to 2; these last 2 points he allocates to Willpower, bringing it up to 30. Wounds

Once your characteristics are generated, it's time to generate wounds. Everyone begins with 7 wounds. To this, you add your TB, and finally you roll a 1d5 and add the result. Record your Wounds in its own category under Characteristic.

As your TB rises throughout the game, your wounds will increase as well, so make sure to keep note.

Example: William has finished his characteristics and prepares to generate his wounds. He starts with 7; to this he adds his TB, which is 2, giving him 9. Finally he rolls a 1d5 and gets a 3; this gives him a total of 12 wounds. So far his sheet looks like this.

SP

SP is the resource you spend to use Persona magic. To work out your SP Pool, you add your Magic Characteristic Bonus (which is chosen by your Primary Arcana) to your Willpower Bonus and multiply it by your Persona Rank. If Willpower -is- your Magic Characteristic Bonus you simply add it twice.

Example: William's Primary Arcana is Lovers, which has Fellowship as its Magic Characteristic. Therefore, he takes his Fellowship Bonus of 4 and adds it to his Willpower Bonus of 3, giving him a total of 7, which he multiplies by his Persona Rank of 1 to get 7 SP. So far his sheet looks like this.

Natural Qualities: Favoured Characteristics and End Notes

The above areas, the areas you have just generated, are your Natural Qualities, your personal ability -without- a Persona active. Whenever a talent is described as using your 'Natural, unmodified' characteristics, this is what it refers to. These characteristics can rise, of course, through the use of the Characteristic Advancement table.

In Persona, raising your characteristics naturally is just like how it is in DH; you purchase an advancement for a sum of XP, with each level of advancement granting you a permanent +5 to your Characteristic. In DH, these characteristics differed in how much XP was required to increase them- the amount was decided by your Career. Persona does not use Careers, however, and instead has a different method of choosing how much your characteristic advancements cost.

Simply put, all Characteristic advancements begin at 250 XP. From this, you must select three Characteristics to be your Favoured Characteristics. You must have at least a 30 in this Characteristic to select it as a Favoured. These Characteristics now begin one step cheaper, at 100 XP.

Finally, choose two Characteristics to be your Weak Characteristics. These Characteristics must be less than 30; if you have no Characteristics under 30, then they must be your two weakest Characteristics. These Characteristics now begin one step more expensive, at 500 XP.

Advancement State Simple Intermediate Trained Expert
Favoured 100 250 500 750
Normal 250 500 750 1,000
Weak 500 750 1,000 2,500

Once this is done, follow the format on the example sheet below on how to list this on your sheet. Amounts surrounded by square brackets [ ] mean it has been purchased.

Example: William selects Intelligence, Willpower and Fellowship as his Favoured Characteristics; these all cost 100 XP at the start and use the Favoured progression state. However, he has long resigned himself to being mediocre physically, and selects WS and Strength as his Weak Characteristics. These now begin at 500 XP to increase. So far his sheet looks like this:

Persona Characteristics

Now that your natural, unmodified Characteristics have been completed, it's time to factor in Persona influences.
