Raphael S Gear

[07:29] <Raphael> For all the damage that had been done to the Geofront during the battle with the Twenty-Fourth - Castiel, as he dimly recalled - the portion of the base given to the Science Department had escaped remarkably unscathed. Which, many were quick to note, was a small miracle considering some of the more volatile equipment kept there.-
[07:29] <Raphael> And it's the Science team that Raphael is on his way to visit now. He's still walking with enough of a limp for it to be noticeable, but some rest, a clean uniform and copious amounts of biogel have done wonders considering how he was looking the day before.-
[07:30] <Raphael> Turning into the final corridor, Raphael swipes his keycard to open the doors and makes his way into the labs.
[07:32] <Minaplo> ["… Not my department." Came a curt voice. The voice of one Barzilai Surov.-
[07:34] <Minaplo> ["But we don't -know- how it works! We've been trying for months, we all have-" Came a younger, more desperate voice. Raphael would recognise the voice- and the freckled, newbie-looking scientist- as one of the Thruster team.]
[08:12] * Raphael considers the scene from a distance for a moment or two, before letting out a small, weary sigh and approaching the pair and searching his memory for the young scientist’s name on the way. "Good morning, you two. Everything alright, Bernard?"
[08:23] <Minaplo> ["-No-." Whined Bernard petulantly. "This prick wants us to do everything yesterday, when we're barely comprehending what it is we're working on!"-
[08:24] <Minaplo> ["It's not my department." Said Surov coldly. "Tell LaFabre to change the configurations of the fuse shielding."-
[08:24] <Minaplo> ["We tried that!"-
[08:24] <Minaplo> ["Have you tried every possible configuration?"-
[08:24] <Minaplo> ["Well, no…"]
[08:44] <Raphael> "Might be worth a try, by the sounds of it." Raphael said mildly. "While we're all under stress, I don't think raised voices will help."
[08:48] <Minaplo> ["I- well-" Bernard looked more than a little abashed. Mumbling indistinctly he left the room.]
[08:51] * Raphael watches him go, his expression neutral. "… Surely being unhelpful only leads to you wasting -more- of your time, Doctor." Raphael says once the other scientist has left.
[08:52] <Minaplo> ["In the short-term." Says Surov.]
[08:52] <Raphael> "Mmm."
[08:58] <Minaplo> ["Did you -want- something, Guillory?"]
[09:00] <Raphael> "I needed to check on the preparations for the Stormbird." Raphael says with a very faint shrug. "We're still on track to finish the final checks by this afternoon, I hope?"
[09:06] <Minaplo> ["Yes. Most of the systems- the stealth system, the sensor package- work. The weapons are going through their final tests."]
[09:20] <Raphael> "Good to know. I'd normally be wary of taking a new design on an operation like this, but given the situation we hardly have a choice." He falls silent for a moment, eyeing one of the labs separated from them by a wide pane of glass. "I was somewhat surprised by the specifications. I can only assume some of the more cutting edge components have been sourced from Kenya."
[09:25] <Minaplo> ["Perceptive." Said Surov. "Yes, they arrived, ahead of the new security force being sent from Kenya as well."]
[09:31] * Raphael gives Surov a sharp look. "… What new security force?"
[09:35] <Minaplo> ["You didn't hear? S2 was depleted during the attack, so the Commander requested a dedicated force from Kenya to fill in the gaps- and do it better than S2. With cutting edge weaponry, no less."]
[09:48] <Raphael> "…" A few seconds of silence at that, Raphael's hand flexing slowly by his side. "… of course. That would make sense."
[09:51] <Minaplo> ["It was a close shave." Said Surov. "If it weren't for the Iron Guard Captain the entire organisation may have collapsed."]
[10:16] <Raphael> "We were lucky to have Captain Savage on site, certainly." Raphael nods, looking slightly put-off by Surov's refusal to use his name but knowing better than to comment.
[10:18] <Minaplo> ["The Iron Guard always perform. Don't forget that."]
[10:33] <Raphael> "I think I know that better than most, Doctor."
[10:35] <Minaplo> [He paused, actually looking at Raphael. "I suppose -you- of all people would." He seemed to be considering something. "Are you free, Guillory?"]
[10:45] * Raphael gives Surov an even look for a few seconds, scratching at a clean-shaven cheek. "… Briefly, sir."
[10:47] <Minaplo> ["Come with me." Surov walked off towards his office.]
[10:48] <Raphael> A moment's pause and a silent sigh, and then Raphael is following behind without comment.
[10:51] <Minaplo> [Surov's office is spartan, as is expected. It's also fastidiously neat. A simple, functional desk with several computer systems on its surface is the most unique feature.-
[10:51] <Minaplo> ["Are you aware of the Rare Equipment Vault?"]
[10:55] * Raphael gives the office a perfunctory look, but his gaze doesn't stray too far from Surov. "I don't believe so, sir."
[10:58] <Minaplo> ["It's a special vault accessible only to the head of Technical. In it are the 'orphan' equipment of NERV and other organisations. Equipment that was never put into production, for example, or prototypes of a discontinued line, or equipment so advanced and expensive that the cost makes mass production unviable."]
[11:10] <Raphael> "I see. A shame such things are being left to waste."
[11:12] <Minaplo> ["They are being protected." Said Surov. "To be used when the time is right."]
[11:13] <Raphael> "And I assume there's a reason your telling me this, Doctor?"
[11:14] <Minaplo> ["In your own way, you assisted me during the attack, and so I decided that- if the reasons are good- to allow you access to some of the equipment within the Vault. On a few conditions, of course."]
[11:36] * Raphael raises an eyebrow. "I'm pleased you realize I -was- trying to assist you, Doctor… but yes," He waves his hand vaguely, "Name your conditions."
[11:37] <Minaplo> ["One: You must not break the equipment. If you do, you must retrieve the pieces."]
[11:37] * Raphael nods.
[11:38] <Minaplo> ["Two: You must not give the equipment to anyone. Absolutely anyone."]
[11:40] <Raphael> … that draws a slight frown. "Beyond my team? Or anyone other than myself?"
[11:41] <Minaplo> ["Anyone other than yourself."]
[11:45] * Raphael seems to weigh this up for a second or two, before he gives Surov a less enthusiastic nod. "Agreed."
[11:46] <Minaplo> ["Three: You must not discuss the equipment with anyone. In the inevitable situation where you are asked about it, you must make the equipment seem more mundane than it actually is."]
[11:48] <Raphael> "… If I must. I have to ask if this is absolutely necessary, though."
[11:49] <Minaplo> ["Yes." Said Surov curtly. "Once you see some of the equipment within you'll understand."]
[11:51] <Raphael> "…" The frown only deepens, but after a moment Surov gets another nod of agreement. "If you insist, Doctor."
[11:54] <Minaplo> [Surov stood, and although he didn't seem to press any buttons, the empty bookcase behind his desk receded into the wall, then slid away, revealing a small elevator door behind it.]
[11:57] * Raphael hesitates for a moment, wondering if he should let anybody else know what he was doing before he followed the mad scientist into his secret underground vault, but a moment later he finds himself standing in the elevator cab and waiting quietly.
[12:00] <Minaplo> [The trip takes half a minute- the doors open into what seems to be half a museum, half a bank vault. Steel walls encircle them, but the space itself is wide and open. Tables are every few metres, containing some gadget or item sealed within glass cabinets.]
[12:05] * Raphael glances at Surov briefly, stepping out to examine one of the nearest tables. He's careful not to touch anything yet - not until he has a better idea of what's going on here.
[12:08] <Minaplo> [Surov follows Raphael along to the nearest table. A pile of drab-looking grey fabric and a thin metal bracelet lie in a heap under the glass. Surov unlocks the cabinet and carefully pulls it out. "Hold this."]
[12:10] * Raphael eyes the item for a moment as though it may lunge out and bite him, and in truth judging from the way /Surov's/ handling it with care he has no assurances that it won't. Still, eventually he would reach out and take it with the same amount of care as the scientist showed.
[12:13] <Minaplo> [The fabric is strange. Nothing like Raphael is used to- light and airy, almost. A deceptively large amount is revealed- Surov drapes it over Raphael's shoulder, with more than enough left over to cover the rest of Raphael's body. Surov clasps the bracelet over Raphael's wrist and presses a button. A light electric current flows through the fabric- little more than a tingle to Raphael-
[12:14] <Minaplo> [… But suddenly, he realises that he can't see his arm. At all. It's turned invisible!]
[12:20] <Raphael> … He looks up at Surov with eyes showing genuine surprise. "We have something like this languishing in a vault?"
[12:21] <Minaplo> ["We have a sixteen million franc invisibility cloak kept safein a vault."]
[12:23] * Raphael finds that rather hard to argue with, it must be said. "What is it, exactly? The material, I mean."
[12:29] <Minaplo> ["Nothing found in nature. It's a latticed metamaterial that responds to certain parts of the electromagnetic spectrum. It'll keep you hidden from the naked human eye, but if you wear it over your head you won't see anything."]
[12:32] <Raphael> "Noted. Will it show up on heat sensors or radar?"
[12:32] <Minaplo> ["Not heat sensors, -mostly-, but it'll pick up the parts of you that aren't covered. Radar, yes."]
[12:36] * Raphael nods. "Still, definitely useful." He says, giving the Ghost Arm one last marvelling look before attempting to (gently) unclasp the bracelet. "Is there anything else down here that you would recommend?"
[12:37] <Minaplo> ["A tuxedo made of reinforced carbon nanotube capable of absorbing a direct shot from a revolver yet allowing you to blend into civilian settings."]
[12:39] * Raphael gives Surov a blank look.
[12:40] <Minaplo> ["S2 wanted it, but it was deemed too expensive." Said Surov. "They just go with kevlar vests now."]
[12:41] <Raphael> "A sensible decision, I believe."
[12:42] <Minaplo> ["Yes, but pound for pound, the 'Bondsuit' is superior in almost every way." Surov glances around the room. "What about a Digiweapon?"]
[12:47] <Raphael> "And what would that be?" He asks, part of him caught up in wondering whether it was S2 or Technical that had named that prototype suit.
[12:50] <Minaplo> [He walked over to another table, where a selection of curious-looking rings sat on pillows. He took one out. "A Digital Weapon- a weapon that sits on your finger, i.e. your digit. This one here-" He took out a ring. It was silver, with a rather gaudy 'taper' towards the tip of the finger. A ruby sat onto the base. "Can be connected with -this-" He attached a thin nozzle- resembling an
[12:50] <Minaplo> old-fashioned cigarette holder- onto the ring. "And acts as an easily concealed portable flamethrower."]
