Raphael S Promotion

[16:36] <Raphael> Spread out on the couch of the NERV safehouse, Raphael Guillory let out a low groan as he tried to shift his weight slightly, eventually deciding it was better to simply stay where he was and continue staring at the ceiling in the darkened room. His shirt was off, the heavy bandages around his chest and legs hiding wounds packed tight with liberal doses of biogel. They'd assured him that the wounds would seal themselves, but that wa
[16:37] <Raphael> but that wasn't much comfort during the long hours it would take to do so.-
[16:37] <Raphael> Thankfully Suzanne was safe in bed, and outside the city was slowly being put right after the fires and chaos the riots had brought with them. For now, while the situation at the Geofront was being dealt with, he had some time to let himself heal before they sent him out for whatever came next…
[16:43] <AdEvaGM> [There was a polite knocking on the adjoining wall to the kitchen. An S2 Agent leaned about- not Gamelin. No one had any idea where Gamelin was. It was Vimes.-
[16:43] <AdEvaGM> ["Group Captain? The Commander and VC are here to see you."]
[16:50] * Raphael sits up sharply - and regrets it right away, judging by his expression. "… Of course." He says, waiting a second to make sure his voice is steady. "Just… I'll need a moment to change."
[16:50] <AdEvaGM> ["Understood, sir. I'll pass the message along."]
[16:53] <Raphael> Slowly, and much more carefully, he swings his injured leg off the couch and pulls himself to his feet to begin the search for his shirt.-
[16:55] <Raphael> A few minutes later he would emerge into the kitchen where the others were waiting, properly dressed and with only a limp to give away his injuries. "Commander. Vice-Commander. Please excuse the delay."
[16:59] <AdEvaGM> [Hohenzollern- looking tired and worn out- was sitting at the kitchen table, a folder in hand. At her shoulder was Raskova, holding yet more folders- Raskova looked as though she'd been in the midst of the fighting, as she bore some light injuries. "Excuse us for intruding, Group Captain. How are your injuries?" Asked Hohenzollern.]
[17:03] <Raphael> "They'll heal, ma'am. Doctor Clement did an excellent job." He says with a small, tired smile that holds little humour. He pulls out a chair and sits down carefully.
[17:06] <AdEvaGM> ["I wanted to thank you personally, Sir Guillory. What you did during the attack was absolutely exemplary."]
[17:09] <Raphael> "Merely what was necessary, Commander." He says, folding his hands on the table. "I'm glad it was enough to get the three pilots through safely."
[17:11] <AdEvaGM> [Hohenzollern chuckled, shaking her head. "Necessary, but that doesn't make it any less extraordinary."]
[17:13] * Raphael waves his hand vaguely, looking almost uncomfortable. "It looks like you two hardly avoided the conflict either."
[17:17] <AdEvaGM> ["I was caught up in it a little, yes, but Raskova decided to seek it out directly. She's always been hands on when it comes to gathering data, haven't you?"-
[17:17] <AdEvaGM> ["Yes, ma'am." Said Raskova quietly.-
[17:18] <AdEvaGM> ["In any case, Sir Guillory, I have several good reasons to come here. The first thing to consider is your position- I've spoken with some of the other directors and the President and we've decided to go through with a mild reorganisation of yourself and your team."]
[17:20] * Raphael manages to keep the frown those words inspire off his face. "Ma'am?"
[17:28] <AdEvaGM> ["Firstly, you're being promoted- as of today, your rank within the French Air Force is being increased to Air Brigadier General. During priority one emergency situations you'll take command of the French Air Force units within Paris-2. Secondly, the President has expressed his desire to roll the Superheavy Regiment into the greater Army structure in due time, so also as of today, you're being given an Army comission of Général de Brigade, with the expectations that you'll eventually command -all- French Superheavy units. Thirdly, after speaking with Colonel Amatore and Security Director Simon we've also decided to amalgamate you into the greature structure of NERV, granting you the rank of NERV Captain and making you the Chief of NERV Special Operations Services- a sub-branch of NERV Security that deals with the same type of missions you've already been sent on- retrieval, raids, etcetera. Your squad will also be transferred accordingly. Your XO will be Léon Thomas, who has been instructed to assist you in any way he can. You will answer to Simon and Raskova directly."]
[17:43] <Raphael> For a long few moments Raphael's response is a mute stare, and the shock isn't showing through on his face the speechlessness is enough of a giveaway. "I… see." He says slowly, wishing he could manage a slightly less stunned response. "I'm honoured, ma'am."
[17:46] <AdEvaGM> ["You've earned it." Said Hohenzollern with a smile. "As a Général de Brigade, the President would like to offer you his congratulations as well as inform you that if you wish it, there are a selection of special residences now available of you if you wish it. Furthermore, from me, as a Captain of NERV you're considered to be one of our priorities. You and your next of kin will be given our protection. As soon as… Well, all this trouble is out of the way, I'll start making calls and requests to see if we can find a way to give back little Miss Sartre's use of her legs."]
[18:08] <Raphael> There's not even a hope of hiding the shock this time. His gaze flicks uncertainly from Hohenzollern to Raskova and back again. "… ah, Commander, I… I can't thank you enough." Raphael says, voice a little uneven. "I mean that."
[18:13] <AdEvaGM> ["Well, I think you've more than earned it." Hohenzollern coughed. "… Especially since we'll need to execute your role as Captain of the NERV SOS immediately."]
[18:15] * Raphael nods slowly, actually seeming slightly relieved by the excuse to slip back into a more professional mode. "I assumed as much, ma'am."
[18:29] <AdEvaGM> [Hohenzollern gestured to Raskova, who stepped forward, placing the folders down on the table. "We need you to lead your team into central London to retrieve VIPs."]
[18:35] <Raphael> "Pilot Blanc." Raphael surmises, leaning forward slightly.
[18:38] <AdEvaGM> ["And Committee Member Shardlake of the HIC, as well as several members of the Royal Family who were unable to escape with King George."]
[18:43] <Raphael> "… Mmm." He murmurs with a slight nod. "How much information do we have? Locations? Likely enemy forces? As I understand it, the situation there was… chaotic."
[18:51] <AdEvaGM> ["Catastrophic." Said Raskova. "At 19:22 it was reported that several large Angel-like entities appeared over London, similar to the ones that harassed forces during Gabriel's attack on Boston. EVA-00 moved in to intercept and was disabled. The entities were temporarily driven off by the Varangian Squad and the Battleship, but concentrated Angelic artillery drove the Varangian Squad back to the battleship. They were able to recover most of EVA-00, but not the Entry Plug."-
[18:54] <AdEvaGM> ["The Entry Plug signal is believed to be somewhere around New Westminster, but we cannot verify if Blanc is there. In any case, enemy vanguard forces are running rife through London as it is." Raskova glanced at Hohenzollern, then back to Raphael. She pushed one of the folders forward and opened the cover.-
[18:56] <AdEvaGM> [It wasn't full of papers, but instead a flat, thin electronic device with a squat cylindrical holoprojector in the centre. Raskova tapped one of the buttons, and a clear image of Britain appeared. The south coast of England, as well as that of Wales, was shaded in blue, whilst the entire rest of the island was red. The area between these two colours was yellow, which included London. "Red represents areas where we maintain control. Blue represents enemy control, and yellow represents contested areas. This battle began 19 hours ago, or thereabouts, Captain."]
[19:03] * Raphael examines the map in silence for a moment, making sure his first impression is correct before he speaks. There's a deep frown on his face now. "… Surely that's not possible. Angelspawn or not, 19 hours shouldn't have been enough for them to gain that sort of stranglehold."
[19:06] <AdEvaGM> ["You're correct. Angelspawn cannot move that fast, and even if they were dropped into every town in the UK there would be enough forces to stop them." Said Raskova with a frown. "What we're dealing with here is a breed of Angelspawn that take the form of a highly contagious virus, Sir Guillory."]
[19:11] <Raphael> "…" Raphael's expression doesn't shift, but he lets out a small sigh. "Do we have enough information to guess at transmission vectors? Power armour might be enough for standard biohazards, but if it has anything to do with AT manipulation…"
[19:19] <AdEvaGM> ["It looks to be biological, as opposed to AT-based as might be feared. The virus seems to be effective whether delivered airborne or via the bloodstream, although airborne-wise it seems to quickly perish if it doesn't affect a living creature quickly. Sufficiently advanced armour such as power armour or sealed carapace armour are enough to prevent it." She pushed forward another folder, which emitted a selection of pictures.-
[19:24] <AdEvaGM> [Raskova tapped one. It showed a ravenous, senseless horde of people, many of them barely wearing rags, overrunning a British Army base. The image was hazy and showed a collection of fumes in the air. "The virus works within minutes, and causes people to mutate. They become stronger, tougher and faster, and from what we can see, utterly berserk. They attack uninfected, quickly overwhelming villages, towns and bases. Although they're fairly easy for a trained squad to shoot down, upon dying they explode and generate a large cloud of the angel virus, as you can see." Raskova pointed at the gasses. "Although as noted it doesn't last very long, it's enough to often disable and infect large portions of a military force. Unfortunately for us, despite their fury, turned soldiers retain their ability to use firearms."]
[19:35] * Raphael works his way through the pictures in silence for a few seconds, pausing now and then to pick out the details in particularly notable images. "… Hmm. Concerning, certainly. Maintaining armour integrity will have to be a priority…" He murmurs, before speaking louder. "Will we be able to deploy via VTOL with the angelic artillery, or will we be moving in on foot?"
[19:37] <AdEvaGM> ["Uncertain. We'll be deploying you as close to the location as we can, which depending on the situation at the time could be on the doorstop or a mile away. You will simply have to deal with it." Said Raskova. She tapped the folder and another image appeared.-
[19:39] <AdEvaGM> ["The 'fanatics' are not unsupported. As you can see from this picture."-
[19:43] <AdEvaGM> [It was a snapshot of a tank squadron. Or rather, what had one been a tank squadron- although the streets swarmed with the infected horde, Raphael's eyes would be drawn to two specific things- one, what appeared to be, horrifically, an infected Iron Guard- on top of a tank, the turret ripped off by its bare hands. But beyond that, however, rampaging through the other tanks, were large entities, almost as large as the tanks. There were three of them. Two of them were predominantly black-fleshed and almost stereotypically Angelic, with long pointed hollow-eyed masks reminiscent of plague doctors, with clawed arms- one of which was firing a lance of light through a tank.-
[19:44] <AdEvaGM> [The third entity was larger, twenty-five or thirty feet tall, demonic- with massive leather-like wings and a bestial head. It was in the process of tossing a hapless tank through an apartment building.]
[19:47] <Raphael> "… Ah." Raphael said mildly.
[19:50] <AdEvaGM> ["The large clawed ones with the light lances can emit the virus, including as a projectile, so be prepared for that." Said Raskova. "I will be accompanying you."]
[19:54] * Raphael glances at Hohenzollern for a brief moment. "… Are you certain, Vice-Commander?"
[19:54] <AdEvaGM> ["Yes." Said Raskova curtly.-
[19:55] <AdEvaGM> ["Raskova considers the protection of the HIC to be her direct duty." Said Hohenzollern.-
[19:55] <AdEvaGM> ["I also wish to see how you operate on the field with my own eyes, to see whether giving you this responsibility was an error or not." Said Raskova.]
[19:59] * Raphael gives Raskova a thin smile that doesn't make it as far as his eyes. "Of course, ma'am." He says.
[20:00] <AdEvaGM> ["We leave in the afternoon." Said Raskova. "Be prepared, ensure your men are ready."]
[20:04] * Raphael nods once. "Understood. I'll begin preparations immediately."
[20:05] <AdEvaGM> [Raskova nodded in return and took a step back.-
[20:06] <AdEvaGM> ["I have every confidence in you, Captain Guillory." Said Hohenzollern with a smile. "Or would you prefer I refer to you as Brigadier General now?" She teased.]
[20:09] <Raphael> "Captain is quite fine, ma'am, thank you." He says with a chuckle… quickly followed by a very faint wince as the pain in his chest redoubles.-
[20:11] <Raphael> "… If you don't mind my asking, ma'am, what's the status of the other NERV divisions?"
[20:13] <AdEvaGM> ["Germany, China and Japan are besieged, and Russia's forces are tied up in Finland. The American and Kenyan teams are being dispatched to the far east, whilst the French squad will be sent to assist both Germany and Russia."]
[20:17] <Raphael> "I see…" He nods slowly, a brief look of worry clouding his face before he shakes it off and slowly gets to his feet. "In that case, I shouldn't keep you. I'm sure you both have plenty of other matters to attend to."
[20:17] <AdEvaGM> ["You're right about that." Said Hohenzollern with a smile. "Have a good night, Captain Guillory."]
[20:30] <Raphael> "Same to you both." Says Raphael with a quick salute. "Good luck with the cleanup, Commander."
[20:32] <AdEvaGM> ["I'll need it." She returns the salute- and before long Raphael is alone with his thoughts.]
