Rei S Trial

[08:54] <Yanmei> Today was the day. By seven thirty in the morning, the hall that Internal Affairs was using to process the Battleship's court-martials was more or less filled with everyone important to Rei's case. -
[08:59] <Yanmei> It had originally been more for presentations than for court trials, but whoever had been in charge of repurposing it had done their job well. There was a raised stagelike area with a witness and judge stand - both currently unoccupied - and comfortable areas sectioned off for presiding panels. -
[09:03] <Yanmei> At ground level were two heavy wood tables where the prosecution and defense gathered, now just chatting nervously among themselves. Beyond them, the audience seating was a vast sea of gold and wine-colored velvet. -
[09:07] <Yanmei> The walls of the room were eggshell white with gold leaf, the carpet with thick, pale, and also had apparent dustings of gold in it, and the massive wooden doors that led to the place had all manners of elegant swirly carvings in them and even more gold. -
[09:08] <Yanmei> In short, everything caught the light and gleamed painfully. At least it seemed that way to Zhang Yanmei, who was tiredly peering over it dressed in her elegant violet cheongsam, her hair flowing loose for once.
[09:13] * Aline was… well. Aline was also not in quite the normal outfit either. A snappy business suit with a moderately short skirt, which was altogether a cool black to counter the brightness of the room. A white silk blouse showed underneath, and the jacket stretched a bit down below her waist, while her /hair/ was done up in a large bun, tied off by a deep blue ribbon. The girl stood about
[09:13] * Aline as calmly as she could, and raised her glasses a small nudge with her fingers once the view focused on her.
[09:16] <Raphael> A few paces behind them, seperated from their table by an ornate wooden railing, Raphael sat amongst the audience. He was clearly tense, Misato at his side.
[09:18] <Minaplo> [William and Isha were also present. William wore a high-collared black shirt, over which he wore a severe-looking black coat that fell to his ankles. In fact, his entire outfit was extremely sharp; his black trousers were immaculate, his shoes polished to a shine. An iron Catholic cross sat against his chest, hanging off a silver necklace around his neck. He looked… Uncomfortable.-
[09:21] <Minaplo> [Isha was wearing a crisp business suit, nothing special about that, except that he looked rather handsome in it. Someone had, however, grabbed a hold of his hair and given him a hair cut; it now fell in a sort of wavy way around his face, giving him a distinguished look, the look of a man who knew what he was doing.-
[09:22] <Minaplo> [And finally there was Rei, sitting behind the Defendant's bench, her hands folded in front of her, her thumbs rubbing against each other in nervousness. She was wearing her full NERV dress uniform- a sharp black with a skirt that fell to her knees, and silver piping and hems.-
[09:22] <Minaplo> ["How do we feel?" Asked Isha to the defense counsel.]
[09:26] <Yanmei> "Oh, I think we're going to do just fine?" Yanmei tossed her hair, glancing briefly over at Lucille Pettigrew's bench with a pleasant smile. "Just think. In seven hours, we'll finally be able to relax."
[09:27] * Aline had another thought about relaxation, but decided to keep it to herself. Instead, she let out a small huff. "We should be ready?"
[09:28] <Minaplo> [William nodded curtly, tugging uncomfortably at his collar.-
[09:29] <Minaplo> [Pettigrew stood up, walking over to the defense counsel and unabashedly holding out a hand to Yanmei. "Good luck. You look great, by the way. I don't know if I could pull off that look."]
[09:34] * Yanmei shook her hand and chuckled. "Thank you~ Good luck to you too. Ah… you know the rest of my team, correct?"
[09:35] <Minaplo> ["I do." She gave them all their own nod.]
[09:36] * Aline politely nodded back. Best to be proper~
[09:41] <Minaplo> [Pettigrew offered another little nod, perhaps a hint of nervousness there, before she headed back to her bench.-
[09:42] <Minaplo> [The rear doors opened, and five people in military uniform began to enter. The bailiff stepped forward. "All rise for the honourable Tribunal, Honours Twycross, Murtas, Yukimura, Polzin and Hobart presiding."-
[09:45] <Minaplo> [The first one in must've been Hobart. Tall, broad-shouldered, with brown hair going grey, parted down the middle. Clean-shaven, with a face that tried to emphasise dependability- a strong jaw, even, round eyes, a sharp but not protruding nose, and a wide brow.-
[09:47] <Minaplo> [Next was Polzin, tall, balding, with grey hair in a horseshoe pattern. He had a hard face, with narrow eyes, but he was actually somewhat overweight, and his body bore that curious feeling of being a once-powerful form having gone to seed.-
[09:51] <Minaplo> [Next was Yukimura. Short, thin, straight-backed, with a ferocious power walk. Her hair was black and straight and fell to her jaw; it was cut perfectly evenly on both sides. She had a compact, pixie-like face, with small ears and thin lips. Her brown eyes roved the court, fell on Rei- then turned to look at Yanmei, the corner of her lips curving into a half-second long snarl.-
[09:53] <Minaplo> [Next was Murtas, who was of medium height, and blonde. She wore thin-rimmed glasses and had thin eyebrows, and a gentle, but clever face, with bright grey eyes.-
[09:56] <Minaplo> [And last was Twycross, the second tallest of the lot behind Polzin. Unlike Polzin, Twycross hadn't let himself go to seed, and he looked strong and fit. He had dark skin, which seemed as though it was stretched firm across his body, giving him a taut, on-the-ball look. He had short white hair and a distinguished-looking goatee, and a pair of half-moon glasses with gold rims. It was obvious
[09:56] <Minaplo> why he was the high judge- he had presence. He looked absolutely comfortable, in control, even. He was the sort of man who would walk down a dark Glasgow alley and not fear a thing.-
[09:57] <Minaplo> [The judges sat. Twycross in the very middle; to his left were Yukimura and Murtas; to his right were Polzin and Hobart.-
[09:57] <Minaplo> ["Be seated." Said the bailiff.]
[10:02] * Aline had indeed gone through the passage of standing, then being seated. She remained mildly expressionless - mildly. There was a bit of a cordiality to her face as well, as she waited for things to truly begin.
[10:04] * Yanmei had done much of the same, looking collected and unruffled even after that look from Yukimura, waiting for the signal to present their case.
[10:12] <Minaplo> ["The matter of Second Lieutenant Ayanami Rei and the assault of Technician, Repair and Maintenance Dept, Dvon Chambers, will now open. If the leader of the prosecution could introduce themselves to the court?" Twycross's voice was deep and sonorous and firmly British.-
[10:12] <Minaplo> [Pettigrew stood up. "May it please the court, I, Lucille Pettigrew, appear for the prosecution." She sat down again.-
[10:13] <Minaplo> [Twycross nodded. "And if the leader of the defense could introduce themselves to the court?"]
[10:15] * Yanmei stood now. "I, Captain Zhang Yanmei, stand as the head of the defense team for this case." She sat back down again, primly.
[10:17] <Minaplo> [Polzin and Yukimura glanced at each other, Yukimura letting out a quiet 'tch' and Polzin shaking his head slightly.-
[10:20] <Minaplo> [Isha tapped her knee. "Etiquette." He said quietly.-
[10:24] <Minaplo> [Twycross turned his gaze to Pettigrew. "Let's keep things on the clock. Prosecution, your statement?"-
[10:26] <Minaplo> ["Yes, your honour." Pettigrew got to her feet, bowing slightly. She left the bench, walking a little out into the 'theater' platform of the room, in the dead centre of it all.-
[10:29] <Minaplo> ["On the sixth of March, 2018, at 11:25 AM, Second Lieutenant Ayanami Rei, assigned to NERV's Boston branch, was present with my learned colleague, the defense counsel Captain Zhang Yanmei, when she overheard a team of NERV technicians discussing recent events in a disagreeable way. At that time, the defendant did proceed to assault one of the technicians present, a Mr. Devon Chambers,
[10:29] <Minaplo> hospitalising him."-
[10:32] <Minaplo> ["Your honours, today I intend to show to the Tribunal that the aforementioned event could have been avoided, but was allowed to happen due to lax disciplinary standards at NERV Boston on a logistical and interpersonal level. Building on this, I intend to show to the Tribunal that the event that took place on the sixth of March was an act of violence that the defendant could have prevented,
[10:32] <Minaplo> but chose to indulge in. For this I will be questioning key witneses, including the defendant, as well as Devon Chambers and Major Alphonse Wellesley-"-
[10:32] <Minaplo> [There was a mild rustle in the Officer's Council.-
[10:33] <Minaplo> ["… In order to prove intent as well as event." She bowed again and returned to her seat.-
[10:33] <Minaplo> [Twycross gave her a quick nod, and then turned to Yanmei. "If the defense would like to respond with their opening statement, if they wish to do so now?"]
[10:37] <Yanmei> "Thank you, your honor." Yanmei stepped over to the raised area the way Pettigrew had done, calm and determined. -
[10:39] <Yanmei> "Today, Second Lieutenant Ayanami Rei sits before you here in judgement of her actions aboard the Dorian Lachapelle on the 6th of March, 2018, 11:25 A.M. -
[10:43] <Yanmei> "At that time, a verbal confrontation beteween the defendant and NERV technician Devon Chambers escalated into a physical confrontation, which sadly resulted in injuries to Devon Chambers. -
[10:50] <Yanmei> "The Defense Council intends to prove that the actions taken by Ayanami on that day are not reflective of her true character as a humanitarian and a loyal, highly disciplined soldier. -
[10:57] <Yanmei> "By presenting medical and scientific evidence, we will prove that she was facing insurmountable factors - many beyond her control - that led to her part in the incident. -
[11:03] <Yanmei> "Finally, we intend to prove that given these circumstances, it is unrealistic to assume that Ayanami had complete control over her actions that day." -
[11:04] <Yanmei> She bowed once, and with that, started back to her seat.
[11:08] * Aline gently looked at Yanmei, and allowed herself to smile briefly. Short, but sweet.
[11:30] * Yanmei smiled back, a little boldly, and then eyed the Judges to see what they would allow next.
[11:33] * ChanServ sets mode: +qo Minaplo Minaplo

[11:46] * ZackSleep has joined #nervfrance
[12:05] <Minaplo> ["Very well. Would the defense like to begin constructing their case?"]
[12:09] <Yanmei> "Thank you, your honors." Yanmei was quick to stand up again, almost as soon as she'd sat down. "We would like to call our first witness to the stand: Director Richard Launceston, of NERV."
[12:20] <Minaplo> [Twycross nodded to the bailiff, and Launceston was brought forward into the witness stand.-
[12:21] <Minaplo> [He was a short, sturdy man, with firm-looking hands and broad shoulders. He sat down, and the bailiff stepped forward and placed a booklet on the edge of the stand.-
[12:22] <Minaplo> ["Do you, Richard Launceston, swear on the NERV Charter laid down by the United Nations at its inception, as well as by the quality of your good name and by whatever deity you may or may not worship, to tell the honest truth by spirit and not letter?"-
[12:22] <Minaplo> ["I do, by the Charter, by my name and by God."-
[12:23] <Minaplo> [Twycross nodded at Yanmei. "Proceed."]
[12:27] <Yanmei> "Yes, your honor." Yanmei stepped forward, smiling. "Director Launceston? Please state your rank and position within NERV for the benefit of the court."
[12:27] <Minaplo> ["Director of NERV in charge of the Boston branch."]
[12:30] <Yanmei> "As the Director of NERV's Boston Branch, you should be informed of the professional performance of the pilots posted there, correct?"
[12:31] * Raphael has quit IRC (Quit: <Minaplo> I like Louis XIV, because he seems like this incredibly wasteful extravagant partyboy, but beneath that double chin, jowls, fourteen ermine capes, moustache, 15 pound wig and 18th century parachute pants is a cunningly machiavellian mind.)
[12:31] <Minaplo> ["Correct."]
[12:32] <Yanmei> "What is your impression of Ayanami Rei's performance as an Evangelion pilot?"
[12:34] <Minaplo> ["Satisfactory."]
[12:38] <Yanmei> "Have any interpersonal conflicts or disruptions between her and other personnel stationed in Boston come to your attention since her arrival there?"
[12:41] <Minaplo> ["None whatsoever."]
[12:41] <Yanmei> "Have you met Ayanami personally?"
[12:41] <Minaplo> ["Yes."]
[12:42] <Yanmei> "What was your first impression of her?"
[12:43] <Minaplo> ["Obedient, willing, dedicated, skilled. Non-threatening."]
[12:46] * SyntaxTerror has quit IRC (Quit: Bye)
[12:46] * SyntaxTerror has joined #nervfrance
[12:46] <Yanmei> "In the time that you've known her, has she ever given you a reason to suspect that she wouldn't obey orders or would neglect her duties?"
[12:47] <Minaplo> ["No."]
[12:47] * Yanmei nodded. "What is her overall reputation at NERV Boston?"
[12:49] <Minaplo> ["To my knowledge, reliable, respected."]
[12:53] * Yanmei nodded again. "Thank you. No further questions, your honor."
[12:54] <Minaplo> [Subdued reactions from the judges. Polzin seemed unfazed, but Yukimura's eyebrows had risen slightly, and Murtas and Hobart were murmuring quietly to each other.-
[12:54] <Minaplo> [Twycross turned to Pettigrew. "Would the prosecution to begin their cross-examination?"-
[12:55] <Minaplo> ["I would, your honour." Pettigrew got to her feet, passing Yanmei on the way. She gave Yanmei a small nod.]
[12:55] * Yanmei gave a small smile back. She settled into her seat again.
[12:55] <Minaplo> ["Not a bad opening." Said Isha quietly.-
[12:59] <Minaplo> ["Director Launceston. You stated that you considered Lieutenant Ayanami's performance as an Eva pilot to be satisfactory?"-
[13:01] <Minaplo> ["Correct."-
[13:03] <Minaplo> ["During the LN War, in how many battles did Ayanami Rei participate in as an Evangelion pilot were victories?"-
[13:03] <Minaplo> <-in>
[13:05] <Minaplo> ["None." He admitted.-
[13:05] <Minaplo> ["Out of how many engagements?"-
[13:07] <Minaplo> ["Eleven."-
[13:09] <Minaplo> ["And how did she fare in the engagement with the Angel codenamed Akhraziel?"-
[13:09] <Minaplo> [Rei, next to Yanmei, stiffened.-
[13:11] <Minaplo> ["She was disabled." Said Launceston.-
[13:12] <Minaplo> ["And her engagement during the second battle against the Big Brother incursion?"-
[13:12] <Minaplo> ["Destroyed and ejected." He said.-
[13:13] <Minaplo> ["With all this in mind, why do you consider her reliable, Director?"-
[13:15] <Minaplo> ["Ayanami's role requires her to be in the thick of fighting." He said. "Many of those situations had extenuating tactical or strategic circumstances."-
[13:16] <Minaplo> [Pettigrew changed tack. "What was your area of expertise before you joined NERV, Director?"-
[13:17] <Minaplo> ["Physics and astro-engineering."-
[13:18] <Minaplo> ["How much experience did you gain in those fields with military strategy and combat situation awareness?"-
[13:20] <Minaplo> ["None."-
[13:20] <Minaplo> ["And who handles the military strategy and combat situations at NERV Boston?"-
[13:22] <Minaplo> ["Major Wellesley."-
[13:22] <Minaplo> ["Discrediting the witness." Murmured Isha into Yanmei's ear.-
[13:23] <Minaplo> ["I see." She said, nodding. "No further questions, your honour."-
[13:24] <Minaplo> [Pettigrew returned to her bench, sitting down. Polzin looked a little bored by the proceedings so far, whilst Twycross was frowning a little.-
[13:24] <Minaplo> ["Would the defense like to advance their case?" Asked Twycross.]
[14:44] <Yanmei> Yanmei's eyes had narrowed slightly during the interrogation, but now they were more or less back to normal. "If it pleases the court, my colleague will be presenting evidence for the court's consideration." She eyed Aline briefly.
[14:53] <Minaplo> ["Step forward, defense."]
[14:57] * Aline stood up, and began walking closer. "Yes, your honors. I would like to present the first of the defense's pieces of evidence. In light of Director Launceston's testimony, the defense presents Pilot Ayanami's service record." She would activate some of the displays, showing various pieces of documentation, while passing a copy to the judges in an appropriately demure way. -
[15:07] <Aline> — "Lieutenant Ayanami has participated in a number of engagements, both against the Angels and the LN. Your honors have already heard from Director Launceston the results of them, but let's consider a few facts." A few taps at a remote for the display, and it moved on to a screen of text with a few pictures of Rei and her EVA unit. "Lieutenant Ayanami is one of the handful of pilots
[15:07] <Aline> considered by NERV to be a 'Pointman'. This designation reflects their ability to not only get 'into the thick of fighting', but to defend others. The role of a Pointman actually usually results in their unit's severe damage or destruction regardless of victory or defeat, simply due to the degree to which they are capable of halting enemies, manipulating their position and attention, and
[15:07] <Aline> then taking severe punishment from them so other Evangelions and their pilots do not have to." A pause to breathe. -
[15:26] <Aline> — Aline pushed up her glasses, and continued. "During the second battle against the Angel codenamed 'Gabriel', as well as the reborn form of 'Voriel', Lieutenant Ayanami helped prolong both her own and Pilot Gabriel-Wei's survival against an opponent they were probably, alone, outmatched against until reinforcements arrived. She also assisted myself to significant effect during the battle
[15:26] <Aline> against the Angel o- codenamed 'Malchediel' as a co-pilot to Unit 00 in a desperate double-piloting measure." Aline allowed a small beat to pass, as she was changing tack. -
[15:32] <Aline> — "However…" Beep, and a new segment of records displayed. "…Evangelion combat has not been the only way Lieutenant Ayanami has served in battle during NERV's engagements. During the LN war, she personally assisted in recapturing the Boston minifront - evenly matched with a powerful Iron Apostle at one point, eventually triumphing. She also, earlier, fought in the service tunnels of
[15:32] <Aline> Paris-2 against a horde of angelspawn - while they were drawn to her by her AT Field, she was capable of pushing through them with the rest of the personnel she fought alongside, and actually had better results than the other group of pilots in the tunnels." Aline was a bit regretful-sounding at that, because she was partially responsible for those failings, but… "In addition, she even
[15:32] <Aline> provided competent bridge-level assistance to Major Wellesley during the engagement against the Angel 'Ramliel' after the unfortunate death of the late Dorian Lachapelle." -
[15:46] <Aline> — Aline paced slightly, looking at the display, which moved onwards. "Of also note is that she personally infiltrated a mafia-ridden establishment in an - admittedly unsanctioned - attempt to rescue Major Wellesley, but that particular incident is of more importance to a later argument of the defense's." Another beat, another change in tack. "Finally… the committee that performs evaluations
[15:46] <Aline> for NERV Boston has found her to be quick to follow orders, consistently courageous and competent, and furthermore notes that she also performs well in the areas of leadership and teamwork." Aline bowed slightly. "That should explain Lieutenant Ayanami's service record for this case, your honors."
[15:48] <Minaplo> ["I have some questions." Said Polzin, leaning forward.]
[15:48] * Aline nodded her head. "Of course, your honor."
[15:51] <Minaplo> ["You've established the defendant's service history and how she's regarded by her base, so I'll get to the point- what are you trying to actually prove that's of relevance?"-
[15:51] <Minaplo> [Yukimura shot Polzin a sidelong look.]
[16:03] * Aline smiled softly, in spite of the pressure of the question. "Namely, that Lieutenant Ayanami has been a competent officer and this is verified by multiple persons, and that her service and high regard mean she is of proper and upright character for an officer, and has not been a layabout or incompetent, This frames her normal officerly conduct in comparison to the incident at the heart
[16:03] * Aline of this case."
[16:05] <Minaplo> ["Mmm." Polzin sat back.-
[16:06] <Minaplo> ["Your honours," Said Pettigrew. "With the court's permission I would like to examine the evidence and ask a few questions of my own."-
[16:06] <Minaplo> [Twycross gave her a nod.-
[16:13] <Minaplo> [Pettigrew stood. She briefly spent a few minutes going over the file, before speaking. "I would like to bring to the court's attention the case of UN High Command versus Lieutenant Roberto de Milano, a UN soldier with an exemplary record, on the road to a fast-track promotion up the ranks, who one day went berserk and wiped out an entire company through the use of explosives and automatic small arms. This precedence proves that whilst a good service record is admirable, it is not a guarantor of innocence."-
[16:13] <Minaplo> ["After all, de Milano was executed for his actions." She added ominously.-
[16:14] <Minaplo> ["Isn't that a rather extreme comparison?" Asked Yukimura, a little shortly.-
[16:14] <Minaplo> ["On the contrary, your honour. If a man with such a good record can have such a violent shift, then wouldn't it be logical to assume that someone like Lieutenant Ayanami would be capable of a smaller shift in relation?"-
[16:20] <Minaplo> ["Is that really the point here, though?" Said Hobart. "I remember that case. Of course de Milano was found guilty, but we still required his service record to give us the basic foundations of his personality and character. It might not've -proven- his innocence, but I think it's logical to assume that someone with a record of violence is more likely to commit violence than someone without that history."-
[16:20] <Minaplo> ["I think you've made your point, Miss Pettigrew," Said Twycross, "And the defense has done the same. Be seated, both of you."]
[16:21] * Aline bowed again, and politely returned to her seat.
[16:46] <@Minaplo> [The judges conferred amongst themselves for a few minutes, before Twycross nodded and gestured to the defense, wordlessly letting them proceed.]
[16:57] * Yanmei was the one to stand up this time. "If it may please the court, the defense wishes for you to consider the implications of the evidence and testimony that you have just heard. -
[17:01] <Yanmei> "Ayanami Rei - a dedicated, brave, and 'non-threatening' soldier, in the words of her own superiors - acted out in a manner that clashed violently with what her service record would suggest is her usual behavior. -
[17:08] <Yanmei> "What would drive her to this? What would drive anyone? Incidents like these aren't unheard of… but it is certainly is lamentable. -
[17:17] <Yanmei> "If there's anything we have learned from other similar cases, such as the United Nations High Command vs. Private Johan Alles, it's that there may be underlying psychological explantions for sudden, violent outbursts from otherwise excellent soldiers. -
[17:23] <Yanmei> "While Ayanami's past doesn't absolve her from her actions on March the 6th, perhaps we will consider that she - like Alles - was influenced by factors that weren't immediately obvious without further analyses and assessment."
[17:28] <@Minaplo> [The judges nodded at that, began to discuss…-
[17:28] <@Minaplo> [Pettigrew was called up to give a counter statement, essentially a summation of what she'd already said. The first hour had been a nervous one for the defense, afraid of missteps, but it had ended strongly.]
[22:41] <Yanmei> There was no time, however, to sit back and relax. The rest of the trial loomed ahead of them, a very long six hours or questions and explanations. In fact, it wasn't long before the next witness was on the stand with Yanmei approaching her; the illustrious President of the United States.
[22:41] <Yanmei> ^of questions
[22:45] <Yanmei> "Madame President," she began cordially. "Could you please describe to the court the conditions under which you first became acquainted with the defendant?"
[22:49] <Minaplo> ["Personally, or professionally?"]
[22:50] <Yanmei> "Professionally, if you would?"
[22:58] <Minaplo> ["Battle of Austin, February 20th, 2017. Lieutenant Ayanami led a NERV strike force of two Evangelion units against my unit, the LN Second Regiment."-
[22:58] <Minaplo> [Hobart bristled quietly.]
[22:59] <Yanmei> "How many other times during the war did you encounter Lieutenant Ayanami in battle?"
[23:03] <Minaplo> ["Ten separate engagements."]
[23:10] <Yanmei> "And how would you describe her behavior during those engagements? As someone who had fought her repeatedly, surely you gained some insight into her quirks and preferences."
[23:18] <Minaplo> ["She was… Orderly, disciplined. Kept in formation, attacked in a controlled, precise manner, trying to maximise damage with minimal exertion and without putting her into a tactically precarious situation."]
[23:19] <Yanmei> "Did she ever come off as excessively violent or bloodthirsty?"
[23:22] <Minaplo> ["Objection!"-
[23:24] <Minaplo> [Heads turned to look at Pettigrew as she got to her feet. "Your honours, the question is irrelevant to the case. The LN Thruster units were automated machines and not human beings, and it's irrelevant to correlate how one treats machines to how one treats another person."-
[23:24] <Minaplo> ["Do you have anything to say to that, Captain Zhang?" Asked Twycross quickly.]
[23:31] <Yanmei> "The LN forces were not entirely composed of automated units? At the time, President Linden had at least some piloted T-RIDEN-T squads under her command, as well as ground infantry who were responsible for invading the Boston Minifront during the final engagement on April 11th, 2017. -
[23:34] <Yanmei> "The April 11th invasion is especially relevant to the defendent, as she engaged infantry personally during the defense of the base."
[23:37] <Minaplo> ["Hmmm." Twycross nodded slowly. "Objection overruled. But I must advise the Defense to be a little more careful about their questions. It is important to establish the fact that those forces exist in the first place for the purposes of this court. Carry on."]
[23:43] <Yanmei> "Thank you, your honor." She turned briskly back to Minerva. "Madame President, did you witness or were made aware of any reports of Ayanami exhibiting excessive violence or aggression during incidents in which she engaged with human troops under your command?"
[23:43] <Minaplo> ["No."]
[23:46] <Yanmei> "Before, you also implied that you knew the defendant on a personal level. Could you elaborate on that by telling us what your current relationship is?"
[23:49] <Minaplo> ["We're friends. After the war finished, Lieutenant Ayanami became an advocate for me within NERV Boston."]
[23:57] <Yanmei> "So you became closer once the war concluded. Did Ayanami ever mention experiencing stress with her co-workers or superiors during this time?"
[00:01] <Minaplo> ["Yes."]
[00:02] <Yanmei> "Could you elaborate on what she told you?"
[00:08] <Minaplo> ["She said that she overheard crewmembers of the Boston base criticising her abilities, her nature and her relationship with Major Wellesley."]
[00:10] <Yanmei> "Was Ayanami upset by these criticisms?"
[00:10] <Minaplo> ["Yes."]
[00:13] <Yanmei> "What were the complaints being made about her abilities and nature?"
[00:14] <Minaplo> ["Objection, your honours. These complaints are being made by nebulous, unidentified parties outside of the boundaries of the court."-
[00:16] <Minaplo> ["Mmm." Twycross folded his hands. "I see what you mean, Pettigrew. Sustained. Captain Zhang, I suggest you find a way to prove that these said statements actually happened, and by whom."]
[00:19] <Yanmei> "Yes, your honor." She frowned a little, but tried to keep moving. -
[00:23] <Yanmei> "Madame President, in your opinion, did Ayanami seem keen on confronting the crewmembers saying those things about her?"
[00:23] <Minaplo> ["Confronting? No."]
[00:28] <Yanmei> "Did she say she was going to do anything about it? Lodge a formal complaint to their superiors, or anything similar?"
[00:29] <Minaplo> ["Yes, she said she was going to lodge a complaint."]
[00:52] * Yanmei nodded, seemingly satisfied. "From what you know of her, how would you describe Rei's typical conflict management style?"
[00:54] <Minaplo> ["Mediative. Not submissive, but not aggressive. She tries to reason with people or appeal to their better natures. If the conflict source isn't another person, she tries to find solace in people she loves."]
[00:55] <Yanmei> "Thank you. No further questions, your honors."
[08:19] <Minaplo> ["Would the prosecution like to question the witness?"-
[08:20] <Minaplo> ["I would, your honour." Pettigrew got to her feet once again, briskly walking past Yanmei as Yanmei moved to rejoin Will, Aline and Isha.]
[08:21] * Yanmei settled back into her chair, watching her carefully…
[08:22] * Aline briefly looked at Yanmei, before also settling back to watch.
[08:36] <Minaplo> ["Ms. Linden," Began Pettigrew. "You established that you considered the defendant to be a disciplined adversary, is that correct?"-
[08:36] <Minaplo> ["Yes, that's right."-
[08:37] <Minaplo> ["And what constitutes 'discipline' from a military perspective?"-
[08:41] <Minaplo> ["The ability to follow orders, the ability to act in concert with allies, the ability to keep one's cool in a stressful situation."-
[08:42] <Minaplo> ["And," Pettigrew continued quickly, "Would the defendant's attack on technician Chambers be an example of that ability to keep one's cool?"-
[08:54] <Minaplo> ["… No, b-"-
[08:54] <Minaplo> ["So you're saying that the defendant acted in an ill-disciplined manner, despite your previous assertation that she was disciplined?"-
[08:59] <Yanmei> "Objection!" Yanmei stood.
[09:01] <Minaplo> ["On what grounds, Captain?" Asked Twycross.]
[09:15] <Yanmei> "Your honors, the witness' response is clearly being mischaracterized to make some point."
[09:16] <Minaplo> [The judges glanced at each other- Twycross and Polzin meeting each other's eyes. Polzin shook his head slightly, and Twycross nodded.-
[09:16] <Minaplo> ["Overruled. Carry on, Miss Pettigrew."-
[09:20] <Minaplo> [Pettigrew nodded, and repeated her question.-
[09:20] <Minaplo> [Linden gave Pettigrew an icy stare. "… I am, but-"-
[09:21] <Minaplo> ["Tell me, Miss Linden, in a military organisation who is ultimately responsible for the discipline of the soldiers?"-
[09:25] <Minaplo> ["… Their commanding officer."-
[09:25] <Minaplo> ["And the defendant's commanding officer is…?"-
[09:30] <Minaplo> ["… Major Alphonse Wellesley."-
[09:31] <Minaplo> ["Are you saying that Major Wellesley is unable to maintain the discipline of his troops?"-
[09:38] <Minaplo> ["No, I am not."-
[09:40] <Minaplo> ["Tell me, Miss Linden, on a day-to-day basis, not including extraordinary circumstances where he must take command of US or UN units, how many individual soldiers individually answer to Major Wellesley?"-
[09:44] <Minaplo> ["… Three."-
[09:44] <Minaplo> ["The Evangelion pilots, correct?"-
[09:44] <Minaplo> ["Correct."-
[09:46] <Minaplo> ["So ultimately, Major Wellesley is charged with maintaining the discipline of -three- individuals. Yet one of these individuals- that is, a full third of his contingent- breaks with discipline and attacks a technician- and you don't consider the Major as having been unable to maintain his troops?"-
[09:51] <Minaplo> ["…"-
[09:51] <Minaplo> ["Answer the question, Miss Linden." Warned Twycross.-
[09:54] <Minaplo> ["… There are mitigating circumstances." Said Linden, stubbornly.-
[09:54] <Minaplo> ["Could you inform the court of these mitigating circumstances?"-
[10:01] <Minaplo> ["Major Wellesley and Lieutenant Ayanami are in a relationship." Said Linden grudgingly.-
[10:01] <Minaplo> [Next to Yanmei, Isha let out a quiet groan and sank back into his chair.]
[10:03] * Yanmei had been scribbling down notes as the cross-examination had worn on, ever since she had reclaimed her seat. Now her pen stopped, and her back went rigid.
[10:10] <Minaplo> ["Could it be that Major Wellesley's duty to discipline his troops has become lax in regards to the defendant due to this relationship?" Asked Pettigrew, her voice clear, yet… Silky.-
[10:11] <Minaplo> ["No." Said Minerva abruptly.-
[10:12] <Minaplo> ["But don't you think it's a conflict of interest for a commanding officer and one of his direct subordinates to be romantically engaged?"-
[10:15] <Minaplo> ["In conventional circumstances, I would agree," Said Minerva. "But for an organisation such as NERV? No, I don't believe the same rules apply directly."-
[10:15] <Minaplo> ["Why not?"-
[10:24] <Minaplo> ["Normal military units have an established hierarchy that involves several levels. Generals speak to regimental colonels, who speak to company captains, who filter down to platoon lieutnenants, who in turn speak to squad sergeants who then address privates and corporals. In this sense, one individual can be in charge of ten thousand, a hundred thousand, a million soldiers at once."-
[10:26] <Minaplo> ["In NERV, the top of the hierarchy- Operations Directors- are directly linked to the soldiers who engage in combat, the Evangelion pilots. Eva pilots aren't normal soldiers. Each one is charged with the operation of powerful warmachines. The aphorism goes that a country with an Eva squad can defeat any other country with an Eva squad- or defeat every single country without an Eva squad
[10:26] <Minaplo> combined."-
[10:28] <Minaplo> ["In this context, a personal tie between the commander and the soldier is essential, for morale, and understanding of both elements. Sometimes it is only trust between the two that allows an Eva unit to win over an Angel or other enemy."-
[10:29] <Minaplo> ["So whilst intimate relationships might seem like a weakness, I believe they are a strength."-
[10:29] <Minaplo> ["I see." Said Pettigrew smoothly. "No further questions."]
[10:45] * ChanServ sets mode: +qo Minaplo Minaplo
[11:11] * Yanmei made one last note with a frown, and then stood up when prompted to continue. -
[11:16] * Aline has quit IRC (Ping timeout)
[11:18] * Suzune has joined #nervfrance
[11:20] * Suzune has left #nervfrance
[11:20] * Aline has joined #nervfrance
[11:20] <Yanmei> She repeated what Minerva had said about Rei - the good points about her discipline, and especially the way she dealt with stress and conflict. -
[11:22] <Yanmei> Then she pointed out what an irregularity the Cafeteria Incident had been when compared to that. -
[11:26] <Yanmei> "Just as a person can't be defined by irregularities in their behavior, neither can we define the relationships they keep based soley on that. A few bad arguments do not present the full nature of a complex romantic, parental, or platonic relationship. -
[11:29] <Yanmei> "Rather, we should look to overall trends in those relationships. I implore the court to take this to heart as we move forward." -
[11:30] <Yanmei> "Thank you." Finished, she politely took her seat.
[11:57] * Aline then stood up - after gaining permission - and began to speak. Her point was similar, but on some level different. Different because it was based on a logical appeal. Aline argued that, ultimately, because she had the wherewithal to leave it to formal processes, Rei's prior actions were generally appropriate. And thus, she contended, things have changed since then, in a way that
[11:57] * Aline would suggest a particularly strong reversal. Aline's point /right now/ is that it's a matter of great stress as one of the reasons why, citing the amazing speed in which the Boston counter-Michael action collapsed and its significantly higher stakes than the LN war (where most of her past failures and the past incident existed in), Rei's recent incidents and injuries, both contributing to
[11:57] * Aline a greater sense of stress.
[08:28] <Minaplo> [But it seemed that it had been Pettigrew's argument and skirmish with Minerva that stuck in their minds. Although they paid a cursory sort of attention to Aline, few of them seemed truly convinced.-
[08:33] <Minaplo> [It was after Aline's presentation that Pettigrew would stand. "The Prosecution calls its first witness: Major Alphonse Wellesley."-
[08:35] * Raphael has joined #nervfrance
[08:35] <Minaplo> [Rei whipped her head up suddenly, a crestfallen look on her face as Alphonse, hesitantly, left the Officer's Council seats and made his way to the witness stand.]
[08:37] * Yanmei seemed less than surprised, although she was frowning deeply. She glanced briefly at Rei before turning her attention back to the stand.
[08:38] * Aline blinked a few times as she was sitting down, and looked a bit awkward (a bit at best).
[08:50] <Minaplo> [Alphonse was given the oath, and then- Pettigrew began her questioning.-
[09:02] <Minaplo> ["Please state your name and rank for the court."-
[09:02] <Minaplo> ["Alphonse Wellesley, Major, Director of Operations for NERV Boston."-
[09:04] <Minaplo> ["And how long have you been with NERV?"-
[09:05] <Minaplo> ["Since February 2014."-
[09:06] <Minaplo> ["And what was your occupation before that?"-
[09:09] <Minaplo> ["I was part of the UN NeoAlexander Project."-
[09:09] <Minaplo> ["And what did you do as part of that project?"-
[09:14] <Minaplo> ["I was trained in the area of military tactics, strategy, organisation and leadership."-
[09:14] <Minaplo> ["Overall, was the program successful?"-
[09:17] <Minaplo> ["No." He said. "Few candidates achieved all desired outcomes- I was one of them."-
[09:17] <Minaplo> ["So the program was flawed, but NERV still admitted you to its ranks?"-
[09:26] <Minaplo> ["That's right." Said Alphonse, a hint of sternness in his voice.-
[09:27] <Minaplo> ["During your training, were you engaged in any live combat situations, or was it just simulation?"-
[09:31] <Minaplo> ["Live combat- I was attached to the Seventh and Eighth UN Intervention Forces during the West Africa and South America campaigns in 2012 and 2013."-
[09:31] <Minaplo> ["What tasks were you entrusted with?"-
[09:33] <Minaplo> ["I acted as a general's aide to General Lachapelle."-
[09:34] <Minaplo> ["What did that entail?"-
[09:34] <Minaplo> ["Clerical work, information transfer, issuing of orders down the chain of command."-
[09:35] <Minaplo> ["So you didn't make any major battlefield decisions?"-
[09:35] * Raphael has quit IRC (Quit: <Minaplo> I like Louis XIV, because he seems like this incredibly wasteful extravagant partyboy, but beneath that double chin, jowls, fourteen ermine capes, moustache, 15 pound wig and 18th century parachute pants is a cunningly machiavellian mind.)
[09:37] <Minaplo> ["No." He admitted slowly.-
[09:38] <Minaplo> ["Do you think that being a general's aide for a conventional military operation prepared you for taking control of an Evangelion squad?"-
[09:42] <Minaplo> ["I think it prepared me for the technical side." He said slowly.-
[09:42] <Minaplo> ["What about the other facets of command?"-
[09:59] <Yanmei> "Objection!" Yanmei was on her feet. "Your honors, the witness's training in Africa has little to no bearing on this case? If there was any doubt of his ability to lead an Evangelion squad properly, it would have been addressed at the time that he was officially appointed to his position."
[10:04] <Minaplo> [The judges glanced at each other- Twycross looked back at Pettigrew. "Does the prosecution have anything to say to that?"-
[10:06] <Minaplo> ["Yes, your honors. I believe the witness's training to be highly important to this case. Mistakes have been made with the appointment of military leadership in the past- I cite examples such as Anderson, 2011, or Orlov, 2018…"-
[10:06] <Minaplo> ["Ahem." Twycross coughed, then gestured for both Pettigrew and Yanmei to approach the Judge's bench.]
[10:08] * Yanmei moved in as prompted, eyebrows rising again.
[10:11] <Minaplo> [Pettigrew did as well.-
[10:11] <Minaplo> ["Let's be a bit informal." Said Twycross, quietly.-
[10:12] <Minaplo> ["Yes, your honor." Said Pettigrew, just as quietly. "Basically, I'm saying that with inadequate training, it's only natural for Wellesley to be lax in governing his troops."-
[10:12] <Minaplo> [Twycross waited for Yanmei to respond.]
[10:23] <Yanmei> "We don't exactly have an established pattern of his governing being 'lax' before this point?" Yanmei pointed out, matching their volume, "And even if we did, we can't necessarily attribute that to his training."
[10:25] <Minaplo> ["How am I supposed to establish that pattern without questioning him?" Said Pettigrew. "And what if we -can- attribute it to his training?"]
[10:35] <Yanmei> "What indeed. His competence as a commander serves your argument how, exactly?"
[10:37] <Minaplo> ["If he's an incompetent commander with lax discipline, then this makes Ayanami disobedient."]
[10:44] * Yanmei frowned deeply, glancing to Twycross.
[10:45] <Minaplo> [Twycross shook his head, perhaps a little apologetically to Yanmei. "Overruled." He said in a clear, loud voice that carried through the hall.]
[10:46] <Yanmei> Damn. Still, she nodded her acceptance.
[10:48] <Minaplo> [And so Yanmei was directed to return to her seat whilst Pettigrew continued her examination.-
[10:48] <Minaplo> ["My training did not entirely prepare me on a psychological level." Admitted Alphonse slowly.-
[10:49] <Minaplo> ["Would you say that you're still psychologically unprepared for your position?"-
[10:53] <Minaplo> ["No." Said Alphonse.-
[10:54] <Minaplo> ["How would you describe the pressures of your position?"-
[10:58] <Minaplo> ["Stressful, constant." Said Alphonse carefully. "There's a lot of weight on your shoulders- failure could mean the deaths of millions, the end of the world. I don't think many people can handle it on a day-to-day basis."-
[10:58] <Minaplo> ["And are you handling it?"-
[11:02] <Minaplo> ["Yes." He said. "With Rei's help, especially." He added, rebelliously.-
[11:04] <Minaplo> ["And what help does Lieutenant Ayanami grant you?"-
[11:04] <Minaplo> [Rei bit her lip.-
[11:08] <Minaplo> ["Affection, stress relief." Said Alphonse coolly. "Someone who listens, someone who is always willing to give you her time."-
[11:09] <Minaplo> ["Your relationship is romantic, isn't that right?"-
[11:09] <Minaplo> ["Yes."-
[11:10] <Minaplo> ["Aren't romantic relationships between an officer and a subordinate against regulations?"-
[11:10] <Minaplo> ["Yes, but NERV also dictates that ODs are permitted to break regulations when it comes to handling pilots."-
[11:10] <Minaplo> ["Have you broken any other regulations when it comes to Lieutenant Ayanami?"-
[11:12] <Minaplo> ["… Yes."-
[11:12] <Minaplo> ["Could you recite for the court any and all breaches of regulations you've made on behalf of Lieutenant Ayanami?"-
[11:18] <Minaplo> [Alphonse sighed.-
[11:32] <Minaplo> ["Relationship with CO of a romantic nature, relaxation of curfew, possession of a creature of Angelic origin, waiving occasional monthly full health checkups, cutting short training periods, moving outside secure areas, not reporting in with security services regularly, permitted absenses from schooling, waiving required psychological checkups, leaving the base of operations without
[11:32] <Minaplo> permission or notification…"-
[11:35] <Minaplo> ["Relaxation of rigorous Synch Ratio testing, breach of local alcohol laws, breach of local automobile regulation laws- not at the same time…"-
[11:35] <Minaplo> [There was an awkward, murmuring chuckle from the gallery.-
[11:35] <Aline> …And a pointed frown from Aline. But that was minor.
[11:39] <Minaplo> ["Frivolous use of command and priority communication channels, possession of unregistered weaponry, casual use of an AT Field, and interfering with NERV Security surveillance."]
[11:43] <Yanmei> Yanmei's hands, clasped together on the table before them, clenched slightly. She glanced at Isha out of the corner of her eye.
[11:43] <Minaplo> [Isha's lips were very tightly pressed together.-
[11:44] <Minaplo> ["These sound serious." Said Pettigrew. She wasn't smiling, but there was a grim, hawkish look in her eye. "Knowing all this, would you say that discipline at Boston is lax? Especially in regards to Lieutenant Ayanami?"-
[11:48] <Minaplo> [Alphonse shook his head firmly. "… No. I apply discipline as required. And it hasn't been required."-
[11:48] <Minaplo> ["Until the other day?"-
[11:52] <Minaplo> ["… No." He said, sagging a little.-
[11:52] <Minaplo> [Pettigrew turned primly to Twycross. The damage had been done. "No further questions, your honors."-
[11:53] <Minaplo> [She returned to her bench, and Twycross nodded to Yanmei. "Would the Defense like to cross-examine the witness?"]
[12:25] * ChanServ sets mode: +qo Minaplo Minaplo
[12:27] <Yanmei> "Yes, your honor." She didn't rise out of her seat, but she did give William a little knowing nod.
[12:29] <Minaplo> [William gave her a grim nod in return, and got to his feet. "Major Wellesley, why don't you tell me about this Angelic creature…"-
[12:30] <Minaplo> [And so for the next twenty minutes William worked the room and Alphonse both, trying to extract each and every regulation out and show it as a harmless, victimless offense without any infringement on Rei's character.-
[12:31] <Minaplo> [He did well, but Pettigrew's arguments still hung in the air; she had linked the failed battles of Boston to its commander, and then that commander to Rei via both command and romance, and with such a foundation, the judges seemed to be moving away from Yanmei's camp.]
[22:51] * Aline was next up, having gotten permission to advance forward, and started the next argument. She displayed documentation once more, this time pertaining to Rei's conditioning. She defined what the Seal of Serenity in particular was, explained a small deal about how conditioning worked, and noted the high - and actualized - likelihood of conditioning decay. Soon, she had finished describing
[22:51] * Aline the nature of the conditioning's effects on Rei's emotions, so Aline moved to her point - namely, that the conditioning engendered dependancy, and created a situation where Rei was not as equipped to deal with strong emotions, having not prior experienced them in any numbers.
[22:56] <@Minaplo> [This, at least, this hard evidence was enough to make the judges truly listen to Aline. When she stopped talking they turned away from the courtroom and began to murmur intensely amongst themselves.-
[22:57] <@Minaplo> [After ten minutes they turned back towards the courtroom, and Twycross bade Aline to continue.]
[23:19] * Aline gave a small nod, and did. "The defense would like to call Ikari Yui via holography." We can imagine the call was prepared in advance, though! So probably a few button presses or other technological fuckeries were involved.
[23:19] <Aline> *Doctor Ikari Yui
[23:21] <@Minaplo> [A holographic emitter began to broadcast her shape into the witness dock. Sitting, her hands clasped in front of her, coolly, perhaps surprisingly calm. She was sworn in- and the examination began.]
[23:23] <Aline> "Doctor Ikari, to begin our questioning about Lieutenant Ayanami Rei's conditioning… what was the original purpose of the Seal of Serenity, if you would?"
[23:33] <@Minaplo> ["To moderate her emotional state. Extreme emotional states would trigger the Seal, giving-" She paused, looking over at Rei, her look soft- "the Lieutenant-" She said the word with pride- "A state of perfect calm. In combat situations, it would allow a pilot to fight and act without fear."]
[23:39] * Aline nodded her head softly. "I see. And since the Seal triggers with 'Extreme emotional states', would it be fair to say emotions not pertaining to combat also are affected by it?"
[23:43] <@Minaplo> ["Yes, unfortunately."]
[23:47] <Aline> "Mm. In light of this…" Aline paced briefly. "What, then, causes the Seal to decay?"
[00:03] <@Minaplo> ["The Seal falls into the category of 'neurological neo-conditioning' techniques. Broadly speaking, these techniques decay over time, about a period of twenty to twenty-five years depending on the individual. The techniques can also be weakened or reduced by intense resistance on the part of the bearer of the conditioning. Constant resistance will begin undoing the manual programming."-
[00:06] <@Minaplo> ["Another contributor is Evangelion piloting, specifically synchronization. When a pilot synchronizes, their brain takes in a certain level of direct contact that causes minute changes. We call it mental contamination. It's controlled, and over time makes it easier for the pilot to synchronise, but it also erodes practically every form of manual neurological conditioning we possess. Projected periods are anywhere between one to five years."-
[00:07] <@Minaplo> ["Finally, there is mental corruption, or effects on the brain due to connecting or communicating with an Angel. The effect is more pronounced and unmeasurable. It is not inconceivable to suggest that an Angel could, if pushed to it somehow, completely cleanse a mind of the effect of conditioning."]
[00:12] <Aline> "Alright then." Aline replied at first, knowing she was to keep this mostly to the facts - but she had ideas now. "Now, given the relatively short period mental contamination gives, and the risk of mental corruption… was there any fallback training or other measure to help control the Ayanamis' emotions and behavior in place, or was there not?"
[00:17] <@Minaplo> ["No."]
[00:24] * Aline decided against acting surprised or really treating this as remarkable. She, yet again, was here for fact collection. "And would it be true that in the absence of the Seal, there would be a need for such kind of assistance due to factors such as or related to inexperience in managing extreme emotional states?"
[00:25] <@Minaplo> ["Objection!"-
[00:26] <@Minaplo> ["On what grounds, Miss Pettigrew?"-
[00:27] <@Minaplo> ["Incompetence, your honors. I do not believe the witness has the qualifications to make judgements about the psychological requirements of the defendant."-
[00:30] <@Minaplo> ["Hm. What -are- your qualifications in psychology, Mrs. Ikari?" Asked Twycross.-
[00:31] <@Minaplo> ["… No qualifications, your honour. The conditioning was handled by a sub-group of the project."-
[00:31] <@Minaplo> [Twycross nodded. "Objection sustained."]
[00:33] * Aline nodded about as gracefully as she could in the situation. "My apologies to the court. The defense has no further questions."
[00:37] <@Minaplo> ["Would the prosecution like to cross-examine the witness?"-
[00:38] <@Minaplo> [Pettigrew shook her head. "No thank you, your honour. The evidence speaks for itself here."]
[08:59] * Yanmei nodded, looking satisfied with that. She gave Aline a quick smile as she returned to her seat.
[09:28] * Aline gently nodded back at Yanmei, and waited briefly. Soon, she'd get permission to step up to begin the next phase of their argument. So, after pressing a few buttons and otherwise manipulating the document displays, Aline revealed the next piece of evidence: Rei's psychological profile. The profile detailed aspects both general and specific, and included her most recent visit - which
[09:28] * Aline contained case-relevant data. It went from the initial trials of her creation (including that brawl with de Pteres) through her daily life, many troubles like Akhraziel or the mafia kidnapping of Alphonse and so on, but also covered who she was, not just what she experienced - gentle, compassionate, but also determined and a fair bit of insecurity. Aline highlighted Rei's flaws and the
[09:28] * Aline concerns the doctor had about her - with an apologetic look on her face to Rei herself - mostly reiterating the insecurity, but also pointing out her over-protectiveness and the weight of many, many responsibilities on her, her near-gullibility, and dangerously self-sacrificing nature. But Aline wrapped up with the needed dovetail - namely, that Doctor Castillo-Delgado was concerned about
[09:28] * Aline what would happen if her conditioning broke down - and demonstrated recently that it /was/.
[09:31] <Minaplo> [Rei looked uncomfortable as her psychological details were shown to the room, but didn't say anything.]
[09:49] * Yanmei was up after that… and so was Castillo-Delgado, as her witness. He was sworn in and prompted to state his name, position, and relationship with Rei for the court before Yanmei got down to it. -
[09:56] <Yanmei> "Doctor, as someone who knows Rei personally, and who has reviewed and is able to interpret her psychological records during her stay in the United States, could you shed some light on her mental state following the Angel attack in downtown Boston during February 2017?"
[10:00] <Minaplo> ["Yes. The nature of the mental contact with the Angel was to force Lieutenant Ayanami to focus exclusively on her relationships with the people she loved, none moreso than her bond with Major Wellesley. The Angel then forced her to experience the sensation of, at the time, believing she would never see or hear or feel these people again."-
[10:01] <Minaplo> [Rei's face darkened at the memory.-
[10:07] <Minaplo> ["The result of this pushed Lieutenant Ayanami into a mental state where she became incredibly protective of her loved ones, fearing that they may be taken from her at any time. For a period after the attack she became extremely emotionally dependent on them, and it is my professional belief that echoes of this time still persist within her actions even now."]
[10:10] <Yanmei> "Could you elaborate? What has she done recently to make you come to that conclusion?"
[10:12] <Minaplo> ["A lot of it is from interviews and sessions with me, but her actions whilst she was injured and interned in the Geofront lend credence to my opinion."]
[10:20] <Yanmei> "Did your sessions with her reveal any additional stress factors that might have also contributed to her erratic behavior during those incidents while she was at the Geofront?"
[10:28] <Minaplo> ["Her partner injured and kidnapped, and everyone -else- she loved and cared for in danger both in Paris and around the world, Metatron's bombardment upsetting her, the death of her father and that effect on her family, and more battles such as the Big Brother incursion."]
[10:31] <Yanmei> "Would you say that any of these stressors continue to affect her today?"
[10:31] <Minaplo> ["Yes."]
[10:32] <Yanmei> "Could you name some of them, Doctor?"
[10:34] <Minaplo> ["All of them to varying degrees."]
[10:36] <Yanmei> "I see?" Yanmei nodded slowly. "Doctor, are you familiar with how neo-conditioning works?"
[10:37] <Minaplo> ["I am."]
[10:41] <Yanmei> "Are Ayanami's actions and confessed compulsions consistant with someone who has been conditioned to regulate their own emotional state?"
[10:48] <Yanmei> * RETCON **
[10:52] <Yanmei> "Based on Rei's irregular behavior and the anxiety triggered by both these stressors and the Angel attack, do you believe Ayanami's Serenity Seal is still working as it was originally intended?"
[10:56] <Minaplo> ["No."]
[11:01] <Yanmei> "Would you recommend any treatments or coping techniques for someone in Ayanami's position? Someone who suddenly had trouble with a Serenity Seal?"
[11:02] <Minaplo> ["Yes."]
[11:04] <Yanmei> "Was Ayanami introduced to any of those techniques or treatments prior to the incident in the cafeteria?"
[11:06] <Minaplo> ["No."]
[11:08] <Yanmei> "In your professional opinion, would she have benefitted from using them?"
[11:08] <Minaplo> ["Yes."]
[11:10] <Yanmei> "In what way?"
[11:11] <Minaplo> ["I believe it could have helped her avoid the events for which she is here in the first place."]
[11:12] * Yanmei nodded firmly. "Doctor, was Rei recieving counseling during the war between the Liberated Nations and the United Nations?"
[11:14] <Minaplo> ["Limited counseling, yes."]
[11:14] * Aline has quit IRC (No route to host)
[11:15] <Yanmei> "Was there anything that she expressed significant anxiety or frustration over during that time?"
[11:16] * Suzune has joined #nervfrance
[11:17] * Suzune has left #nervfrance
[11:17] * Aline has joined #nervfrance
[11:18] <Minaplo> ["Yes."]
[11:19] <Yanmei> "Could you describe what they were?"
[11:20] <Minaplo> ["The defeats during the war, she didn't feel like she was doing enough. The Akhraziel attack happened during that time as well. She was also expressing somewhat heightened anxiety regarding certain body issues."]
[11:21] <Yanmei> "Could you elaborate on how she felt about those defeats?"
[11:22] <Minaplo> ["Worried, she wasn't sure what would happen to her or her loved ones in the case of ultimate defeat. She was feeling as though she was inadequate for the situation."]
[11:24] <Yanmei> "Did she report experiencing any backlash for her defeats by loved ones, superiors, co-workers…?"
[11:27] <Minaplo> ["Yes. She reported that members of the NERV Boston ground staff were discrediting and insulting her behind her back."]
[11:27] <Yanmei> "And how did she feel about that?"
[11:32] <Minaplo> ["Hurt, insecure."]
[11:33] * Yanmei nodded. "Thank you. No further questions~"
[11:37] <Minaplo> ["Would the Prosecution like to cross-reference the witness?"-
[11:37] <Minaplo> ["Yes, your honour."-
[11:39] <Minaplo> [The cross-referencing took little more than six minutes, but there wasn't much in the way of purchase here, not with old Castillo-Delgado. Pettigrew ultimately returned to her bench frustrated.]
[12:01] * Aline would be the next to stand after securing permission to approach, and launch into a fair summary and expansion on the prior points. "The absence of the Seal of Serenity…" she began, and pointed out that such an absence was crippling to someone who had - as we now know relatively well - grown dependant on it. The damning lack of fallback counseling was a major factor in producing
[12:01] * Aline a number of erratic behaviors, and further made it difficult to cope with the mental corruption thus hence caused by Akhraziel - the combination was devestating. Out of a mixture of unfamiliar emotions, extreme stresses, personal inadequacies and insecurities… and even a protective desire spurred to unrealistic heights by Angelic intervention, Rei thus acted in a fashion compellingly hard
[12:01] * Aline to resist, even for someone of such caliber.
[12:10] <Minaplo> [And this time, Aline's argument, backed up by expert testimony and hard evidence, hit home. The judges paid attention to her every word, and she returned to her bench feeling the satisfaction of success.-
[12:10] <Minaplo> ["The prosecution would like to call its next witness- Thomas Williams," Said Pettigrew.-
[12:14] <Minaplo> [Williams- a tall man with a bushy brown goatee and a balding head, gave testimony. Since much of it in some way backed up what Castillo said, Pettigrew's questions became cleverer and sharp. She began to construct for the court a picture of Rei not being provided with assistance because of a breakdown in discipline and accountability.-
[12:14] <Minaplo> ["Did Ayanami end up missing on scheduled psychiatric sessions?"-
[12:14] <Minaplo> ["Yes."-
[12:15] <Minaplo> ["And was a reason ever given as to why these sessions were waived?"-
[12:15] <Minaplo> ["No."-
[12:15] <Minaplo> ["Did it seem arbitrary to you?"-
[12:15] <Minaplo> ["I admit yes."-
[12:15] <Minaplo> ["No further questions."-
[12:16] <Minaplo> [And then William came to begin the cross-exam. It started out alright…-
[12:16] <Minaplo> [… But soon things spiralled out of control.-
[12:17] <Minaplo> ["Did you ever file complaints for these seemingly 'arbitrary' waivers?"-
[12:17] <Minaplo> ["No."-
[12:17] <Minaplo> ["So you let it happen?"-
[12:17] <Minaplo> ["… Yes."-
[12:17] <Minaplo> ["And didn't you take an oath to -help- patients, doctor?"-
[12:17] <Minaplo> ["Objection! Badgering the witness!"-
[12:17] <Minaplo> [And then…-
[12:18] <Minaplo> ["So you considered this arbitrary. On Major Wellesley's profile, did you note that you considered him to be unreliable?"-
[12:18] <Minaplo> ["Objection! Misquoting witness!"-
[12:18] <Minaplo> [And…-
[12:19] <Minaplo> ["If it is true that NERV Boston is ill-disciplined, then does that not also extend to yourself, Doctor Williams? If this is true then you yourself must be considered to be an unreliable witness-"-
[12:20] <Minaplo> ["Objection! The defense is testifying!"-
[12:20] <Minaplo> ["Oh come on!" William turned on his feel. "You wouldn't even let me finish-"-
[12:20] <Minaplo> ["I don't need to! You're making arguments!"-
[12:20] <Minaplo> ["You're making spurious objections!"-
[12:20] <Minaplo> ["This isn't how you run a defense!"-
[12:21] <Minaplo> ["You can barely run a prosecution-"-
[12:21] <Minaplo> ["Hack!"-
[12:21] <Minaplo> ["Shrew!"-
[12:21] <Minaplo> ["Pretty boy airhead-"-
[12:21] <Minaplo> ["Protestant!"-
[12:21] <Minaplo> [Twycross hammered the gavel.-
[12:21] <Minaplo> ["Order in the court! Both the defense and the prosecution will -return to their seats- or I will hold them both in contempt."-
[12:22] <Minaplo> [And so it was that William slunk back to his seat, thumping down next to Aline, raw anger radiating off of his body.]
[12:26] * Yanmei had watched this all with wide eyes, a few different emotions working their way across her face before she could suppress them. Now, she glanced at Isha…
[12:26] <Minaplo> [He held a hand over his face.
[12:26] <Minaplo> ]
[12:26] * Aline for her part was bristling uncomfortably, feeling the anger as if she were Sera around an AT Field.
[09:32] <Aline> » Time passed, and after gaining permission once more - perhaps with a silent assurance this wouldn't be so… awkward… Aline stood and prepared the evidence one last time. This time, it was a series of medical records, especially those from Rei's time during the mafia abduction. She was injured by the initial attack - a fact mostly used to set the stage - and her mental condition
[09:32] <Aline> consistently decayed. There were multiple attempts to break out of care - and a good chunk of successes. During these times, her condition mentally worsened, and by the time she finally went on her little excursion into mafia territory, Rei was pretty despondant and tormented. Such emotions are powerful things, and worse, were a clear example of her mental corruption - she was faced with
[09:32] <Aline> a situation where she /did/ lose Alphonse, if briefly, and it nearly broke her.
[09:50] * Yanmei was quick to follow up once Aline was done, rising to her feet and clearing her throat before clearly and dramatically calling the next witness: Rei Ayanami herself! -
[09:52] <Yanmei> Once she was sworn in and introduced - amid the court's low, curious murmuring, undoubtedly - Yanmei went to work. -
[09:57] <Yanmei> "Second Lieutenant Ayanami, you have just heard my colleague introduce records that describe some of your erratic behavior patterns during your latest internment at the Geofront's hospital. Please describe to the court, in your own words, how you felt during those incidents?"
[10:00] <Minaplo> ["… Scared. I felt like everything I'd been trying to build up for myself was coming down all at once. I-I felt frantic, a lot of the time, like I was lost in a place I didn't recognise."]
[10:03] <Yanmei> "Did you try to calm yourself down during all this? To take a deep breath and clear your head, the way you might have during a scary battle?"
[10:07] <Minaplo> ["Yes. But it didn't work."]
[10:09] <Yanmei> "What about after you had left the hospital? When you were attacking the mafia? What were you feeling then?"
[10:11] <Minaplo> ["Even more frantic, a-and angry. Really angry. I couldn't control it at all."
[10:11] <Minaplo> ]
[10:13] <Yanmei> "What weapons did you use when you were attacking them, Second Lieutenant?"
[10:15] <Minaplo> ["My staff."]
[10:19] <Yanmei> "Records indicate that you often use that weapon for melee combat instead of, say, bladed weapons, guns, your AT Field, or other more lethal weapons. Why is that?"
[10:20] <Minaplo> ["The staff is special. When it hits an enemy it sends out some kind of energy pulse that locks up their muscles. I can use it to fight people without risking killing or hurting them."]
[10:21] * SyntaxPhone has joined #nervfrance
[10:22] * Yanmei nodded. "Second Lieutenant, did you use your staff on Technician Devon Chambers during the incident in the cafeteria?"
[10:22] <Minaplo> ["No."]
[10:24] <Yanmei> "Why not?"
[10:25] <Minaplo> [Rei squirmed. "I didn't think about it. I just acted…"]
[10:26] <Yanmei> "That's all right, that's all right. Why don't you describe to us what was going on your mind from the begining. Take us through the incident in your own words."
[10:28] <Minaplo> ["Where should I start?"]
[10:29] <Yanmei> "Why don't we start from when you entered the cafeteria"
[10:34] <Minaplo> ["Alright…"-
[10:35] <Minaplo> [And so Rei summarised it all. Her entering with Yanmei, sitting down to her meal, hearing Chambers and his lot come in and start denigrating her and Alphonse and everyone else. Rei mentioned how she felt upset and depressed even before the start of the incident, but this incident itself just made it worse, turning her sadness into rage and fury. She mentioned hitting him with the chair,
[10:35] <Minaplo> Yanmei's orders, and Rei eventually breaking down in the brig.]
[10:41] <Yanmei> "You hit him with a chair," Yanmei emphasized, latching on to that bit when she was done. "Even though you could have used your staff more effectively or… well. How many combat styles do you know, Second Lieutenant?"
[10:44] <Minaplo> ["Seventeen."]
[10:45] * Yanmei blinked. "Could you list a few?"
[10:51] * SyntaxPhone has quit IRC (Quit: Bye)
[11:05] <Minaplo> ["Takenouchi Ryo jujutsu, shotokan karate, Eskrima, Muay Boran, German unarmoured school of the longsword, krav maga, Bei Shaolin kung fu, sanshou kickboxing… That's eight."]
[11:09] <Yanmei> "Th-that's quite enough, thanks? Instead of using any of those styles, or using your staff, you struck him with a chair because 'you didn't think about it and just acted'. Correct?"
[11:13] <Minaplo> ["Yes…"]
[11:15] <Yanmei> "Now, the sort of things that Chambers was saying… had you ever heard similar criticisms or accusations made on you or Wellesley during any time in your career?"
[11:23] <Minaplo> ["Yes."]
[11:24] <Yanmei> "Did you feel the same way then that you did during the cafeteria incident?"
[11:25] <Minaplo> ["Not exactly. I was still hurt and upset, but not to the same degree."]
[11:28] <Yanmei> "So that uncontrollable feeling you were describing wasn't present back then?"
[11:30] <Minaplo> ["No."]
[11:31] <Yanmei> "Thank you. No further questions?"
[11:36] <Minaplo> ["Would the Prosecution like to question the defendant?"-
[11:39] <Minaplo> [And so Pettigrew stood up, but the courtroom was silent- in a strange, uneasy way- as she began her questioning. At this point, it didn't seem as though Pettigrew had any cards left.-
[11:40] <Minaplo> [Ultimately she ended up with a fruitless cross-reference, and found herself sitting down, her position just as bad as it had been before she'd stood up.]
[12:09] <Aline> » Aline stood up one last time, and spoke again once granted permission. She argued hard now, using the recent revelation of Rei's combat style to deliver a point that, well, without precedent, she simply snapped. The breakdown was significant and crucial, because unlike the mafia incident mentioned prior, there was a lack of moderation, of purpose and forethought. After all, she preferred
[12:09] <Aline> those combat styles and has used them in the past (as noted in the service record) for everything from proper combat to invading the mafia to kicking Sera in the ribs. "Why stop using them now? That's the question I asked." Indeed.
[12:17] <Minaplo> [Aline's words were like a pronouncement onto the hall.-
[12:18] <Minaplo> [The hour bled away, and the judges convened, murmuring to themselves. Eventually Twycross leaned forward. "If the head of the Defense Counsel and the Prosecution could approach the table?"]
[12:19] <Yanmei> A little puzzled, Yanmei nevertheless stood and walked over.
[12:23] <Minaplo> [As did Pettigrew.-
[12:24] <Minaplo> [Twycross leaned forward. "We're of the opinion that we've heard all we need to hear. As the tribunal for this hearing we've decided to forward the idea of giving a verdict now."]
[12:26] * Yanmei suddenly found herself regarding the courtroom's recent odd bouts of quietness in a new light. She glanced over at Pettigrew, and then back again, a little wary. "Certainly. If that's what you've decided…"
[12:28] <Minaplo> ["I don't think I can change much at this late juncture." Admitted Pettigrew.-
[12:28] <Minaplo> ["Very well, then. Return to your seats."]
[12:29] * Yanmei did just that, her strides slow and controlled. She immediately leaned over and whispered something to Isha.
[12:30] <Minaplo> [Isha's brow furrowed, and he folded his arms, his expression unreadable.-
[12:31] <Minaplo> [Twycross stood up, as did the other judges- prompting everyone else in the room to rise as well.-
[12:32] <Minaplo> ["We have concluded that this Court Martial has heard all it needs to hear in order to make an informed judgement, with consent from both the defense and prosecution."]
[12:35] * Yanmei was trying her hardest not to glance over at Rei now.
[12:37] <Minaplo> [Rei was fidgetting uncontrollably…]
[12:38] * Aline tried her best to remain impassive, but sometimes blinked a few times or otherwise showed some kind of sign. The suspense…!
[12:42] * ZackSleep is now known as Zack
[12:44] <Minaplo> ["After much deliberation and consideration of the facts, this tribunal has decided to vote four-to-one in favour of exonerating the defendant."]
[12:50] * Yanmei … went quite still. She stared blankly for a time and then swung her eyes around as if to confirm that she had heard that correctly. Four-to-one!
[12:58] <Minaplo> ["Second Lieutenant Ayanami Rei is hereby cleared of all charges. However, it is the position of this tribunal that she be granted extensive and rapid assistant to help alleviate her emotional and mental issues…"-
[12:59] <Minaplo> [Rei was sitting stock still. Something seemed to get through, though, and she snapped out her hands, grabbing Yanmei and Aline's wrists.]
[13:00] * Yanmei jumped slightly clearly not expecting that. However, she managed a shaky smile, and patted the hand that Rei was using to grab at her as some sort of acknowledgement or comfort.
[13:09] <Minaplo> ["I hereby call this tribunal closed." Twycross stood, gestured to the room- and then began to shake the hands of his fellow judges.-
[13:09] <Minaplo> [Slowly, Yanmei would hear the sound of people starting to file out…]
[13:12] <Yanmei> "Over," Yanmei echoed. "It's over!" Happily, she grabbed Isha's shoulder with her free hand and shook it slightly, dropping her voice to a low hiss. "We won! I told you this outfit would help."
[13:13] <Minaplo> ["I'd prefer to praise your organisation and argument over your fashion sense." Said Isha, but he was grinning.-
[13:13] <Minaplo> ["Whew." William let out a long breath, falling back in his chair. "Talk about stress…"]
[13:17] <Yanmei> "Tell me about it?" She turned, this time to her other side. "Rei, are you all right?"
[13:21] <Minaplo> [Rei didn't respond, not at first. Then she bowed her head, trembling- and then threw her arms around Yanmei wordlessly, hugging herself into Yanmei's shoulder.]
[13:26] <Yanmei> "I guess so?" she muttered, half amused. She patted her arm lightly, letting her have a moment.
[13:35] <Minaplo> [Footsteps as someone headed over, standing in front of their table. It wouldn't surprise Yanmei as to who…]
[13:39] <Yanmei> "Major~" She looked up. "Care to switch places?"
[13:41] <Minaplo> ["I would, actually." He said with a confident smile.-
[13:41] <Minaplo> [Rei pulled herself off Yanmei's shoulder, looking up. "Al… Thank you. Thank you for everything…"-
[13:42] <Minaplo> ["It's not me you should be thanking." He said, giving Yanmei a knowing look.]
[13:44] <Yanmei> "Heh. Well, you know, we already understand, isn't that right?" She glanced to the rest of the defense team.
[13:46] <Minaplo> [Isha smiled a little to himself.-
[13:47] <Minaplo> ["Still." Rei gave Yanmei a huge smile that was both joyful and incredibly relieved. "Al is right. If it weren't for you guys… Thank you, Meimei, Mr. Isha, William…"]
[13:49] <Minaplo> ["Leenie…"]
[13:53] <Yanmei> "You're very welcome, Rei~" Yanmei stood, stretching. "Make sure you tell all your sisters about this. I bet they were all really worried?"
[13:55] <Minaplo> ["I will!"-
[13:55] <Minaplo> [Alphonse chuckled.-
[13:55] <Minaplo> ["Come on, Kitten. Let's go home."]
