Sera 1

[18:06] <AdEvaGM> [NEON GENESIS EVANGELION. Episode Sera 1. Date: 1st of November, 2021.-
[18:11] <AdEvaGM> [It's unknown when the actual decision was made. It was probably made even before Rei's death.-
[18:14] <AdEvaGM> [Nevertheless, some six weeks after Rei's death, the decision was broadcast- due to unacceptably low Synch Ratio results, he'd been delisted as one of NERV's essential personnel. On the very same day, he was turned over by S2 to the French police, to be prosecuted for his role in the murder of Michel Noel.-
[18:14] <AdEvaGM> [The trial dragged on- Sera did, in spite of his best efforts, have a few friends left at NERV with the connections to support him in this new arena.-
[18:15] <AdEvaGM> [But ultimately it was an inevitable end. He was found guilty and sentenced to prison for life.-
[18:17] <AdEvaGM> [And thus would the first day of the rest of his life begin. Sera de Pteres, the great Evangelion pilot… Sentenced to a cell with a single bed, a cold floor, a single small barred window and a sturdy iron door. A day of endless mindnumbing routine. A life of false penitence.]
[18:28] <Sept> Even with how tired he was from all the process, Sera wasn't stupid enough to try to escape or to throw his life away. He'd lived like this, once upon a time. He could learn to do it. Of course there were times when the despair seemed impenetrable - after each time he let himself slip down the path of hope. But the ex-pilot simply forced himself to find comfort in that routine, day after
[18:28] <Sept> day.-
[18:29] <Sept> And after a lifetime of admiring the prison fortress Bastille from afar, he found himself living in one just like it.
[18:36] <AdEvaGM> [This particular day began like every other. "Wakey wakey." Came the patronising, petty voice of the guard. "Hands off cocks and on with socks. Move it." The unappealing sound of cell doors opening- dreary light barely visible outside, cloud hiding the sun's face. The door to Sera's cell opened. "Feeding time at the zoo. Move it!"]
[18:40] <Sept> It wasn't meant for him. That's how he made it from one day to the next, just like he'd done on the streets. Recognise what bad things are your fault and what aren't. None of this was his fault. Sera followed the guard's suggestions.
[18:43] <AdEvaGM> [Breakfast was mostly the same as it was every day. Two slices of toast, a bit of butter, and a bowl of soup. Today the soup was a tomato.-
[18:44] <AdEvaGM> ["Lo, Sera."-
[18:45] <AdEvaGM> [Someone was waiting for him. Youngish face, cleanshaven, with clever eyes and straight black hair- Paul. A sneaky and sly bastard if there ever was one.]
[18:50] <Sept> "Hello." No eye contact, just going about his business.
[18:53] <AdEvaGM> [Paul didn't go away. "Sleep well? Yeah?"]
[18:57] <Sept> "Of course." He hadn't. Sera vaguely remembered how difficult it had been to learn to sleep in a closed, almost silent apartment. He was certain it hadn't been this difficult.
[18:58] <AdEvaGM> ["Looking forward to breakfast? It's a bit thin, eh? I bet a posh guy like you's used to dumplings and pork, huh?"]
[19:01] <Sept> "Think what you want. I've lived off worse."
[19:04] <AdEvaGM> [They reached the serving table. Georges- a tall, rather malevolent man- was serving the soup. He ladled it into their bowls.-
[19:04] <AdEvaGM> ["Say, you got any, ah, plans today, eh?" Asked Paul of Sera.]
[19:06] <Sept> "Waiting for Godot. That'll be taking up all of my time today."
[19:06] <AdEvaGM> ["Well whilst you're doing that, you wanna get in on a bit of a deal, eh?"]
[19:07] * Sept said nothing, and calmly made for a table.
[19:09] <AdEvaGM> ["Y'see, Leon thinks he can- forage- something from the kitchens, but we need a place to hide it. There's some snout in it for you."]
[19:10] <Sept> "Don't need it. Find someone else."
[19:14] <AdEvaGM> ["Come on!" said Paul, a whine in his voice. "Alright, fine. There's a croissant in it for you too."]
[19:15] <Sept> Sera took a spoonful of his soup. And another. And another. "No."
[19:49] <AdEvaGM> ["Alright, then, well, enjoy your soup."-
[19:51] <AdEvaGM> [The breakfast passed without incident. Then it was out for exercises.-
[19:51] <AdEvaGM> [Then they had Courtyard Time after- but not Sera. "De Pteres!" Roared a guard. "You've got a visitor!"]
[19:56] * Sept paused, very much tempted to refuse. But this wasn't the usual time for visitations… He'd receive them just this once.
[19:59] <AdEvaGM> [He was led into the visitation room- not divided by a phone booth, as one might expect. Rather, just a room with tables and chairs. Sitting at one was…-
[20:01] <AdEvaGM> [Ginevre Fontaine. Once the overall Commander of NERV, then the commander of NERV Japan, now she was just a humble scientist working in Paris. She was… Exactly as he remembered.]
[20:04] * Sept sat down and said nothing. He looked her in the eyes sharply, waiting.
[20:06] <AdEvaGM> ["How are you adjusting?"]
[20:08] <Sept> "…Irrelevant. I missed my chance. And you?"
[20:12] <AdEvaGM> ["I'm fine." She said. "Do you get much news in here?"]
[20:13] <Sept> "No." Maybe he could have, with some modest effort.
[20:14] <AdEvaGM> ["Did you know they're saying that there's been Angel sightings in the Pyrenees?"]
[20:17] <Sept> "I didn't. How is NERV responding?"
[20:23] <AdEvaGM> ["We've investigated. Sent 00 out to look- nothing interesting. An avalanche disturbed an old angelspawn corpse and people were panicked…"]
[20:25] * Sept gritted his teeth slightly. "What about 01?"
[20:28] <AdEvaGM> ["We don't have a pilot for it." Said Ginevre. There was a hard sort of steel in her eyes, now.]
[20:31] <Sept> "Be honest with me, Ginevre. How likely is it they'll ever need me again?"
[20:32] <AdEvaGM> ["I can't say for certain. But I'd be surprised if they did."]
[20:35] <Sept> "Then this is all I can concentrate on. Forget everything else."
[20:38] <AdEvaGM> ["What are you concentrating on, Sera?" She asked firmly.]
[20:43] * Sept spoke in a matter-of-fact tone. "Survival. I can't adapt to anything else. I was ready to die as a pilot. I was counting on it. I -have- nothing. And nothing is difficult to live for."
[20:50] <AdEvaGM> ["I see." Said Ginevre. "Do you even have a reason to survive?"]
[20:51] <Sept> A tiny bit of hesitation. "I don't want to die."
[20:55] <AdEvaGM> ["Understandable."]
[20:58] <Sept> "Elisha's not coming back."
[20:59] <AdEvaGM> ["What makes you so sure?"]
[21:02] <Sept> "I was supposed to do it. I promised him I'd do it, and I promised I'd help you. But… the last thing I remember… We had an argument. I couldn't count on him in that battle. I went too far."-
[21:03] <Sept> "That hope won't get you anything, Ginevre."
[21:04] <AdEvaGM> ["Hope?" She smiled. "Whoever said anything about hope? Hope implies uncertainty." She stood up. "That was always your mistake. To presume too much, even about yourself."]
[21:05] <Sept> "Ginevre..?"
[21:06] <AdEvaGM> ["What?"]
[21:08] <Sept> "I -am- sorry."
[21:12] <AdEvaGM> ["I know."-
[21:12] <AdEvaGM> [A pause… Then- "Expect Gendo to come visit at some point."]
[21:13] <Sept> "…I see. I will."
