Social Links

Social Links

Personae are powerful entities. A Persona-wielder can create fires or ice out of nowhere, resist blows that would kill normal people- but most importantly, they can fight the threat of Shadows, something beyond the scope of anyone else. It is their duty and the purpose of their power.

However, it would be folly to ask a Persona user to do this alone. Personae are expressions of one's inner nature, their 'true self'- and they are only as strong as the person who wields them. A truly realised Persona user is one who strengthens himself by relying on the support of those they trust and love. As the Persona user forges bonds with others, their Personae grow stronger from the power that lies within that same bond. It's this curious aspect of Persona that one refers to when they mention 'Social Links'.

What is a Social Link?

A Social Link is a bond between your PC and another character, whether another PC or an NPC. It represents the strength of their friendship, but it also represents the depth of understanding between each of you.

Social Links are organised by Arcana. Thus, you can have one Social Link per Arcana in the tarot (from Fool to Judgement). The only exception to this is that you may not possess an Arcana identical to your Primary Arcana- if your Primary Arcana is Magician, for example, you cannot form a Magician Social Link.

The Arcana attached to each Social Link represents what the person represents to you. Thus, a Magician Social Link is likely to be with a person whose situation or personality mirrors that of the Magician Arcana.

Every Arcana has ten ranks- the higher the rank, the more mechanical bonuses it grants you, and the closer you and that person become. Progressing from one rank to the next requires two things: one, that you've accumulated 10 Social Link points with that person (As per the 'Hang Out' action in Personal Time), and two, that you have the time to mini with that character to advance the relationship. Some characters will have special requests or problems for you as well.

Two notes.

One: NPCs may represent different Arcana to different people.
Two: PCs count as Social Links as well- when two PCs form a Link with the other, the Social Link takes on the Primary Arcana of the other participant.

What does a Social Link do?

Social Links provide several functions, which differ slightly depending on certain circumstances. The overall functions are listed below.

1) All Social Links provide a boost to the amount of Gained XP a Persona starts with on Fusion. Social Links only provide Gained XP to Persona that share their Arcana- so a Magician Arcana only provides XP to a Magician Persona on fusion. Every rank of a Social Link provides a 10% XP boost in this way, meaning a maximum of 100% bonus when brought to Rank 10.
1a) There is a caveat to this. You cannot form a Social Link that matches your Primary Arcana. Instead, any Social Link that matches an Arcana you do not possess grants a 5% XP Boost per rank to any fused Persona of your Primary Arcana. This stacks with the benefit of other non-Arcana S-Links as well.
No matter how many S-Links you possess, however, only a max of 4 non-Arcana Links can contribute to this bonus, meaning a maximum of 200% when all 4 Links are at Rank 10.

2) All Social Links count as unique Contacts with their own skills and talents. The reliability of these Contacts grows over time.

3) All Social Links offer other 'Bond Bonuses' depending on the rank of the Link itself.

A chart has been created below, listing the benefits by rank.

Rank Secondary Arcana S-Link Non Arcana S-Link Contact Bond Bonus
1 10% of Base XP 5% of Base XP Common Contact +5 to Fellowship Tests w/Person, 1d5 Realization
2 20% of Base XP 10% of Base XP Common Contact +10 to Fellowship Tests w/Person, 1d5 Realization
3 30% of Base XP 15% of Base XP Common Contact +15 to Fellowship Tests w/Person, 1d5 Realization
4 40% of Base XP 20% of Base XP Common Contact +20 to Fellowship Tests w/Person, +10 to a particular Personal Time Test, 1d5 Realization
5 50% of Base XP 25% of Base XP Trusted Contact +25 to Fellowship Tests w/Person, 1d5 Realization
6 60% of Base XP 30% of Base XP Trusted Contact +30 to Fellowship Tests w/Person, +15 to a particular Personal Time Test, 1d5 Realization
7 70% of Base XP 35% of Base XP Trusted Contact +35 to Fellowship Tests w/Person, +2 to Active Mode Threshold, 1d5 Realization
8 80% of Base XP 40% of Base XP Trusted Contact +40 to Fellowship Tests w/Person, +20 to a particular Personal Time Test, 1d5 Realization
9 90% of Base XP 45% of Base XP Trusted Contact +45 to Fellowship Tests w/Person, +4 to Active Mode Threshold, 1d5 Realization
10 100% of Base XP 50% of Base XP Perfect Contact +50 to Fellowship Tests w/Person, +25 to a particular Personal Time Test, +1 Fate Point, +6 to Active Mode Threshold, 1d5 Realization

Note: A Perfect Contact gets a +10 to all tests made to find information for you, and does not need to be convinced to provide you with Assistance.

Danger to Social Links

Social Links are not perfectly safe. They can be damaged through the normal way- disagreements, arguments, clashes can all harm a relationship. In these situations, it's possible for a Social Link to decay- at which point it'll subvert to a previous rank or be destroyed entirely.

Should the person with whom you share a Social Link die, however, the link does not break- it remains where it was when the person died.
