That Bird Beyond The Remembering His Free Fells

[08:32] * Yanmei was slow to get her bearings in a place like this. There wasn't anything particularly menacing about it: trees loomed above her, a small stream ran at her feet, grass everywhere. It was peaceful and calm, a very good approximation of what a small natural forest was like. Maybe it was the fact that she hadn't been in many forests before. Maybe it was the fact that it existed at all. -
[08:34] * Raphael has quit IRC (Quit: <Mina‘Haplo> ’T' is for Tao, who is Tsundere as hell :|)
[08:35] <Yanmei> But here she was, for better or worse, on her feet and on the lookout, even while she finished up a quick conversation by phone. "Thank you again, Lucille. I'll bring her by as soon as I can. See you later?" A little pause and she hung up, snapping her cell phone shut with a sigh.
[08:43] <Sept> She'd find Sera eventually, a small ways down the stream, sitting and staring down at the water. A slight shift in his posture signalled that he'd probably noticed her coming, but that was all.
[08:48] <Yanmei> So Yanmei made her way to him in little hurry, initialy declining to sit when she reached him. "De Pteres." She was in casual clothes. Ruffled pink skirt, plain white blouse, boots. Her gait and expression were pretty tired, however.
[08:53] <Sept> He stayed quiet for a few moments longer. The boy wasn't looking quite well-rested, either, but didn't seem quite as tired as she did. "Yanmei. Staying busy?"
[08:55] <Yanmei> "As always?" She frowned, looking at the stream now too. "Tomorrow's the big day."
[09:07] <Sept> "Yeah, I remember. How're you feeling about it?"
[09:14] <Yanmei> "…" Yanmei tossed her hair. "If it was just a rescue mission, I could stomach it, but this is almost contemptible."
[09:17] * Sept looked up from the stream and faced Yanmei. "Hmm? What do you mean? I thought it -was- a rescue mission."
[09:19] <Yanmei> "Let me ask you something. Don't you think the timing on that last Angel attack in Boston was a little too handy?"
[09:20] <Sept> "What are you suspecting?"
[09:25] <Yanmei> "A friend let me in on a discovery he made. Something important was tranferred to Boston just before Isaiah and I arrived. You remember the Sixteeth Angel, right? The one in orbit?"
[09:26] <Sept> "Of course. Wait… You don't mean to say those two Angels were..?"
[09:28] <Yanmei> "Hold it." Yanmei held up a hand. "I'm just using that one as an example of something because of the way it fought. You remember that lance, right? The one that Blanc has now?"
[09:29] <Sept> "Oh… sorry. Yeah, I remember it, vividly enough."
[09:33] <Yanmei> "Apparently Adam had a weapon like that too. And apparently, that was what was taken to Boston, for whatever purpose." Yanmei frowned. "I don't know if our bosses care as much about the rescue as they do getting that thing back before Azariah gets his hands on it."
[09:36] <Sept> "I see. So you'd say the ones who decided on the transfer are to blame?"
[09:38] <Yanmei> "That's right. I can't be sure? But I'd say that forcing that scenario with 08 was one of their objectives."
[09:40] <Sept> "Seems plausible. So it would've been something like a test run to determine if he, and you, could handle piloting that unit?"
[09:43] <Yanmei> "No. It would have been a setup to get him into the entry plug so that they could justify another hearing." Yanmei's eyes narrowed. "All he did was keep a high synch ratio enable 08 to berserk and that was enough."
[09:45] <Sept> "But if he hadn't been able to do even that, as some side effect of your link, a hearing would've been pointless."
[09:49] <Yanmei> "You're giving them too much credit. If he hadn't been able to synch, the city of Boston would have been destroyed, and Adam's weapon would be in the hands on an Angel. The stakes were way too high for that."
[09:54] <Sept> "I don't think it's safe to think they wouldn't use a plan that convoluted." Sera massaged one leg idly, shifting his weight to the other. "But you're probably right. What happens now, if we're to be fighting alongside Isaiah?"
[09:57] <Yanmei> "I don't know. After tomorrow's battle I can't say if he'll be fighting alongside us with all that much frequency."
[09:59] <Sept> "But you think you'll be able to handle the… effects?"
[10:03] <Yanmei> "I don't exactly have a choice, do I?" A rueful smile. "He's been putting up with 04's berserking for a while now. There's no reason why I can't do the same."
[10:04] <Sept> "What if I ever came up with a way to help? A way to… stop it?"
[10:08] <Yanmei> "Don't worry so much about it." Yanmei shook her head. "The key to stopping it is probably having a greater degree of control over the Libido Effect. And something like that just takes time and practice."
[10:11] <Sept> "I'm not worrying, Yanmei. I'm asking. If it was possible to let go of it, would you?"
[10:15] <Yanmei> "No." She said flatly. "So just stay out of it."
[10:21] * Sept turned back toward the trees and the scenery in front of them. "…I understand. Sorry for prying."
[10:26] <Yanmei> "It will be fine." Yanmei tossed her hair. "It won't end up like Adrian and Isabelle."
[10:26] <Sept> "Or Ginevre and Elisha?"
[10:27] <Yanmei> "I don't know what to think about those two," she admitted. "You know, they still commune with each other."
[10:34] <Sept> "I know very well what she's gone through. You don't want that, either. There are too many ways it can all go wrong for you. If you want to go through it all with him, it's very important you never take the first step on any of those paths."
[10:41] <Yanmei> "…" There are questions, now. Why was he a sudden expert? She glanced at him, those glasses and familiar face, and then rather deliberately glanced away again. "I don't need a coach," she muttered.
[10:47] * Sept breathed out sharply, like a very small sigh with frustration barely sneaking in there. "And I don't need to talk to you about any of this, if you don't want to. You -understand- that. But I think you do want to talk about it. Don't you?"
[10:54] <Yanmei> "No," she said after a long, grudging pause. "But I know that I should anyway. What do you know?"
[11:03] <Sept> "…where do I start?"
[11:05] <Yanmei> "I know what we found out about them at Eden Base, but beyond that, I don't know what you know or how you found out. Did you question 01 about it after that? Or…" she looked vaguely uncomfortable.
[11:07] <Sept> "NERV keeps extensive archives on a lot of things. I didn't take it on Elisha's word, or his memory, if you're afraid of that."
[11:09] * Yanmei stared at him. "I would have thought that they'd keep it off the books."
[11:14] <Sept> "They wouldn't. They just take very good care of the books. But I had help."
[11:15] <Yanmei> "Oh?"
[11:16] <Sept> "Well. They never cleaned up after Elisha's departure. I'm not sure if they can, there might be something stopping them, but… That got me through most of the security."
[11:20] <Yanmei> "I guess it would," Yanmei sighed. "So in those files were details about the Libido Effect between them."
[11:21] <Sept> "And everything else they knew about it, yeah. A lot of it Elisha's research, of course."
[11:23] <Yanmei> "Including how to sever it, I assume?"
[11:25] <Sept> "No. He had no reason to. He still had a use for it, and for Ginevre. But I'm confident it's possible."
[11:26] <Yanmei> "I'm more curiou about what that use was. If it was to keep him from going insane with loneliness while he was an EVA, I don't think it worked?"
[11:30] <Sept> "So he could keep his influence, NERV's influence, on the outside, while still wielding the power of the Evangelion."
[11:32] <Yanmei> "I see. Not too surprising?"

[11:35] <Sept> "So… How much do you know about the A- and E-genes?"
[11:38] <Yanmei> "Only as much as it relates to creating a Libido Effect or piloting in general. Don't ask me about nuances, though."
[11:47] <Sept> "The E-gene holders… 'Eves', have the capability to contain other AT fields. Sometimes absorb them entirely, as we now know is also physically possible. For each of the Eves, there is an 'Adam', one of the A-gene holders specifically linked with them."
[11:51] <Yanmei> "So… An E-gener can only form a link like this with that specific person?"
[11:54] <Sept> "Yes. There should be only seven of those pairs in existence. Though all of the ones that haven't formed a bond are… no longer in any state to be able to do that."
[11:58] <Yanmei> "Wait, why? And what determines this pairing off scenario anyway? I always thought it was chance or something…"

[12:04] * Sept paused to think something over, but soon continued in the same tone. "There are many, many more A-gene bearers than there are Eves. But all of those with either gene have souls that are… older. Different to all the other ones on Earth. The Adams' and Eves' souls are intertwined beyond that."
[12:09] <Yanmei> "Mm." Yanmei let it sink in slowly. "What else do you know?"

[12:16] <Sept> "Well… The Angels have seven of these pairs, as well. We know of two. Well, one and a half. Malchediel and the Scribe were one. We don't know anything about Ramliel's Adam. But you can understand it's bad for us to leave either one alive alone."
[12:18] <Yanmei> Her eyes widened. The -Angels- were like this too? Bit by bit, she let her gaze taper off to the side. "You don't have to worry about that. It was the Seventeeth. Elemiah."

[12:31] <Sept> "I… see. They didn't know about him back then. But to continue, the fact that we and they have Eves in the same manner… An Eve has the possibility to retain, to take others' AT fields, any AT fields for themselves. Even Adam's or Lilith's. You and Aline, and all the other pilots like you should be aware of that. We don't want that to happen."

[12:38] <Yanmei> "I know, I know." Yanmei rubbed her face. "He's the E-gene bearer, but if he catches something, then I will too."

[12:45] <Sept> "Tsubaki and Isabelle as well. Isabelle understands, understo-. When I talked with her, she understood the risks. Tsubaki might not, possibly not even if we tried to explain."
[12:53] <Yanmei> "Hm. Well. We can only hope that she doesn't have to face something like that? Tokyo's been pretty far from the attacks that have happened. So have the States, prior to NERV's idiocy with that sword."
[12:57] <Sept> "Mmh. Although I fear the only time it'll be relevant will be in the, well, 'the end'. And the three of us can't weather that alone."

[13:07] <Yanmei> "The end, huh?" Yanmei muttered to herself, and then shook her head. "Question. You were digging in the MAGI's files, right? Did you see anything on the potential pilot roster? Personal files, that sort of thing?"
[13:10] <Sept> "…no, I'm afraid not. I didn't have much time. It took a lot of searching just to find this much."
[13:15] <Yanmei> "Oh." She sounded disappointed. "Never mind, then. But that pretty much wraps up my questions? Unless you have any for me that you're curious about."
[13:23] <Sept> "I… have none. There's one other thing, but… I've told you before, but I just want to make sure. Whatever happens, I will -always- do my best to help you, with any problem, no matter how big or impossible it might seem. You know that, right?"
[13:26] <Yanmei> "I understand that. And I'll keep in mind for things I can't handle." She smiled. "Disregarding the obvious latest development, life's pretty much under control, though?"
[13:30] <Sept> "Yanmei," Sera said, looking at that smiling face of hers. He had an apologetic expression on his. "The Libido Effect… it's not what you think it is."
[13:34] <Yanmei> "The merging of two AT-fields. Or based on what you've said… maybe the partial absorption of one into the other." She didn't stop smiling completely. "Am I wrong?"
[13:39] <Sept> "Technically, yes, but… it's not coincidental, it's not a… a manifestation of the relationship already in place. The Eves are vital to their race's continued existence in many ways. The Effect is at its core a survival strategy, a mechanism for the Eve's survival."
[13:44] <Yanmei> "So what, then, is the A-gene bearer in this relationship? A shield or protector? A second pair of hands against threatening entities? That was how this whole thing between him and I started, you know."
[13:50] <Sept> "I know, but the Eves… Their souls, they're dominant, at the deepest level. They know they need to survive, turning what seems like a two-way bridge between souls into a… conduit for something even more reliable than someone who loves them as deeply as their Adams."
[13:52] <Yanmei> "A conduit for -what- exactly?" Her smile was faded by this point.
[14:00] <Sept> "For control. For someone seemingly independent, but… not quite. Not consciously, of course, and over a -long- time, but… but, you've heard the rumors and the stories of what Ginevre used to be like. That person couldn't have worked as a director for NERV for a day, let alone for years, and under these circumstances. She trampled her own ideals over and over these past years. She lied
[14:00] <Sept> and killed."
[14:07] <Yanmei> "…" The smile was pretty much gone now. She was staring hard, not at him, but at the grass, searching, seemingly lost. "I won't lose myself," she muttered. "Not even to him. I can't afford to…"
[14:10] <Sept> "…" Sera looked downward in respect, staying silent for the moment. "I'm so sorry, Yanmei," he finally said. "That's what 04 wanted to… it's why I…"
[14:18] <Yanmei> "'s always control, isn't it?" She muttered, and she looked exhausted once more. Another hand through one of her twintails, though that only made her hair look more disheveled. "I think… I need to go somewhere and be alone for a while."
[14:23] * Sept nodded hurriedly. "Of course, of course. That's a-alright. I'm just a call away."
[14:31] <Yanmei> "Right. Right, I'll call or… something." She looked around, noting how quiet this place was. Maybe there was something halfway decent about it after all. But those were very fleeting thoughts. She was already moving off. "I'll see you."
[14:35] <Sept> "None of us want to lose you, Yanmei," he faintly called after her. He wasn't sure whether she could hear him at all anymore, but still he stayed there, sitting, in the same pose she'd found him.
