The Southeast Asian Question

"Look on the bright side. Maybe now Pham will stop punching our Chinese marines."
- Kourosh Rustami, Prime Minister of the Federation

Shortly after Impact, Chinese forces launched its "Restoration of Order in the Southern Countries" Campaign, which involved a mass Chinese invasion of Southeast Asia. Ostensibly to 'restore order', in reality the countries were occupied, bound to China in a 'Federation' and subordinated to Chinese needs. Although the Chinese have always faced armed resistance in the region, they have nevertheless managed to extract resources from their occupation- raw materials, but also crucially food supplies to feed China's people. If the people of Southeast Asia had to go without, so be it.

However, with Wu Yuanzhang's invasion fleet moving ever closer to the Chinese mainland, the region has become much more vulnerable. Already UN forces are preparing to invade Malaysia and Thailand, and it is expected that the resistance movements will intensify their efforts..

Prime Minister Rustami has recommended that we withdraw all occupation forces from Southeast Asia. This idea would have been anathema to the Chinese leadership in any other time. However, the fact that Wu's force is so close has them panicked, and the occupation forces can be put to use defending China proper. Furthermore, the delivery of Canadian food supplies has relieved China's food crisis for the present, and so Southeast Asia is not necessarily required for now. Although a withdrawal will leave the countries completely open, it might allow China to return with a bit of diplomatic clout later.

Nonetheless, if forces remain in Southeast Asia, it would give us the option of extracting some quick resources before the battles.
