Yanmei And Freya

[01:34] <Yanmei> The doors of the elevator closed, and it rumbled downward. Yanmei, however, kept her composure wrapped tightly around her now. Freya was great, but she was no Aline. No good letting her guard down. "Yongouki is the designation for 04, isn't it?" she said after a while. "I don't know Japanese, but even I can tell that."
[01:36] <Freya‘Solheim> "It looks like it." Said Freya mildly. "So that means Alex was meant to pilot EVA-04, huh?"
[01:40] <Yanmei> "That makes quite a bit of sense," she sighed. She watched the numbers tick down in silence for a few moments. "I’m sorry. By now it should be obvious that I don't really have any errands? Blanc will probably hate me for this."
[01:43] <Freya‘Solheim> Freya chuckled. "She’ll forgive you. I mean, she might be annoyed, but Leenie really is trying to help. You can explain yourself and she'll give you a hug and that'll be that." Said Freya cheerfully.
[01:51] <Yanmei> "Hmm." She made a noncommittal noise, head tilted to the side. "That guy… has been on my case since I got here. And now I have an inkling as to why. I should be happy about that? But…"
[01:52] <Freya‘Solheim> "That inkling doesn’t really solve the problem, does it?" Said Freya sympathetically. "It's not like you can step aside and give him 04."
[01:54] <Yanmei> "The two probably deserve each other," she muttered. "What's more… troubling? Is why NERV went to the lengths they did to acquire a pilot when they already had one that was fully trained and everything. Was it Commander Fontaine's sentimentality?"-
[01:57] <Yanmei> That bastard… she swallowed demurely. That bastard had years of experience that gave weight to all of his stupid criticisms. And here she was, scrabbling desperately to measure up to expectations, learning weapon after weapon, without a chance of ever catching up to him.
[01:59] <Freya‘Solheim> "Well…" Freya pondered. "She -is- his mother. What sort of mother would willingly sign her only child off to go work in a war machine? Especially since the Commander must’ve been aware of 04's personality."
[02:01] * Yanmei almost flinched at that. "Yeah. Maybe that's it."
[02:01] <Freya‘Solheim> [Ding! The elevator opened.]
[02:04] * Yanmei stepped out into the lobby. "I’ve been here for a year, and no one bothered to tell me. Did NERV China know about this? They should have mentioned it before I left."
[02:05] * Freya‘Solheim followed her out. "Mentioned that you’d be replacing Alexandre?" She asked. "Oh yeah. I should give you a lift!"
[02:07] <Yanmei> "A lift? You can drive?" That made her give a surprised pause!
[02:08] <Freya‘Solheim> "One of the many benefits of being seventeen, Yanyan. And the -other- benefit to NERV paying me a monthly wage." She winked.
[02:11] <Yanmei> "How much *are* they paying you? I can’t even afford a laptop on what I've been making…"
[02:11] <Freya‘Solheim> "About 600 dollars a month, after they pay for my food and stuff." Said Freya cheerfully. "It’ll be 800 after they make me a Pilot."
[02:13] <Yanmei> "Wait… what?! You're going to be a pilot? And 600 is a lot!" She narrowed her eyes, jokingly suspicious. "Are you sure you don't outrank us, or something?"
[02:14] <Freya‘Solheim> "Hahaha." Freya giggled delightedly as the doors to the building opened. "I’m actually listed as a sort of 'Political Officer'. What that -actually- means is that I'm assigned to take care of Septy-Sept in public, y'know, all that." She grinned. "And, well, not necessarily a pilot. They're going to start training up backup pilots, and I've been chosen to be the backup for EVA-01."
[02:17] <Yanmei> "I see. Backups." So they were more expendable than she had counted on. "I think you'll do well? 01 seems… well, mysterious, but probably easygoing. I still don't know much about it."
[02:22] <Freya‘Solheim> "They haven’t had me synch with it yet, so I'm not too sure. I know Septy thinks pretty highly of it, though." Said Freya cheerfully, leading Yanmei to a black, reliable-looking car. "Hop in and I'll take you wherever~"
[02:25] <Yanmei> "Well…" Home would probably have Marianne there, but she couldn't think of anyplace else. At the very least, she could wait until Freya departed, and then head somewhere aimlessly to walk off the swell of insecurities she was feeling. "I guess I should just head back to he apartment and get some sleep?"
[02:26] <Freya‘Solheim> "Aw, no ’Take me to the Mall'?"
[02:28] <Yanmei> "Another time, I think." she winked. "And anyway, you should get back before too long? The others will start to miss you. Especially de Pteres~"
[02:29] <Freya‘Solheim> "Despite the appearance that Sept relies on me to operate day-to-day, he -can- survive without me, Yanyan." Said Freya, snickering as she opened the door to her car and slid in. Did that just go right over her head? Or was she, metaphorically speaking, ducking?
[02:33] <Yanmei> "Hmm~" Yanmei slide into the passenger seat as well, and buckled up. The car was probably bugged, she thought to herself. Everything was bugged. Damn that Section 2… if only she could talk freely for once.-
[02:37] <Yanmei> "Maybe I should quit the student council election," she surprised herself by muttering.
[02:37] <Freya`Solheim> "Huh?" Freya looked over at Yanmei quizzically. "But you’ve been psyched for that for ages, though. You even have Gabriel-Wei working on it. What's up?"
[02:40] <Yanmei> "I don't know," she admitted. "It's fun, but I don't think I can win it. And anyway, Dorian has me… cooperating with Fontaine, at least temporarily. I'd rather not look at that guy for a while."
[02:42] <Freya‘Solheim> "Hrm." Freya turned to Yanmei. "What’s wrong, Yanyan? What's got you like that?"
[02:44] <Yanmei> "It's… difficult to explain?" She smiled at her. "But you are right about one thing. I did make promises to supporters and I have to uphold them. Soo… dropping out isn't really possible right now."
[02:47] <Freya‘Solheim> "Heheh. Well, it’s up to you. I'd vote for you, at least." Said Freya, patting Yanmei on the shoulder cheerfully. "But no, seriously, c'mon. I've talked to Sept about -his- problems. Understanding your situation won't be hard~"
[02:53] <Yanmei> "…" She peered out the window on her side. "There's a lot I need to think about. About 04, and Fontaine, and whether or not I've been fighting with the wrong Fontaine all this time. I'm trying very hard at learning new things, making NERV look good, and so forth. But… I thought it was because I had to?" She gestured vaguely.-
[02:56] <Yanmei> "Now there are backup pilots, and Fontaine is a fully trained NeoSpartan or whatever, and why have I just been a buffer between him and the battlefield for all this time when he really -wants- to fight? Not that I have problems with fighting myself either," she added quickly, remembering the possibility of extra ears lying about.
[02:58] <Yanmei> "And there's more. The nature of the Evas, and what will happen to them when the fighting stops, and why 04 has been acting halfway decent to me lately…"
[03:00] * Freya‘Solheim is a sharp girl. Having lived on the streets for a long time and, of course, being the daughter of two actors- no matter how obselete they may have been. She smiles knowingly. "Well. I think it’s pretty important to think about what happens afterwards. As to how 04 acts… Well, I can't say. Maybe it just likes you." Said Freya, shrugging slightly. "But as for that business with Alex… Would you like to hear my take on it?"
[03:02] <Yanmei> "Please." She hasn't turned around to look at her, instead continuing to stare out the window.
[03:03] <Freya‘Solheim> "Well. Let’s ask you a few questions. EVA-04 is a super-powerful walking Weapon of Mass Destruction that only a select few- all of them young- can pilot. Right?"
[03:03] <Yanmei> "Yes, that's right."
[03:05] <Freya‘Solheim> "And Alexandre Fontaine is a super soldier, bred from the age of 7 or 8 to not only achieve near-superhuman prowess and ability beyond equal. Right?"
[03:06] <Yanmei> "Yes?"
[03:06] <Freya`Solheim> "And not only that, but this super-soldier without equal was assigned to pilot the war machine without equal. Right?"
[03:07] <Yanmei> "Supposedly?"
[03:08] <Freya`Solheim> "And yet." Freya beamed. "For some reason, they chose you. A girl who, despite seeming to be a normal girl from China, can not only pilot this war machine, but was chosen -over- the super soldier, who she also beat in a running race recently. This was after your second victory over a beast from beyond the stars intent on the eradication of humanity."
[03:17] <Yanmei> "The way you put it… it sounds so bizarre." She muttered. "I couldn’t have done the last one without help, but… The three of us, me, de Pteres, and Blanc - we should be undesirables compared to Fontaine, Akagi, and the others. I don't understand it. Do -they- understand it? Is it really possible to work together?"
[03:22] <Freya‘Solheim> "Of course it is, Yanyan." Said Freya fondly. "You and Fontaine could work. Even if it’d be painful… I dunno. You said the two of you are being forced to work together in the Presidential Elections? Well. It's sort of like that. If you guys can, however grudgingly, work together to beat Windsor-Yamato, you can work together on other things, too."-
[03:22] <Freya‘Solheim> "As for… Well. Being ’undesirables'…" Freya leaned over and nudged Yanmei. "Didn't Asuka say that some NeoSpartans had mental conditioning to forget their training?" She said in a teasing tone.
[03:28] * Yanmei made a slight face. "Pushing buttons, I see~ You've been hanging around Dorian too much."
[03:32] <Freya‘Solheim> "Ahahaha. I’m just teasing you, Yanyan." She reached over and ruffled the Violet Pilot's hair. "But… I don't know, Yanmei. But I think the idea of you being an undesirable is a purely subjective thing. You can't -say- that Alexandre would be any better than you. And even if he were, you're still winning battles. Now, I know you say you did it with help, but…" She grinned. "Have you ever heard of the term 'Esprit de corps'?"
[03:36] <Yanmei> "The spirit of the group, right?" Yanmei considered it thoughtfully. "Staying strong for the sake of a team?"
[03:38] <Freya‘Solheim> "Sort of." Said Freya. "I mean, that’s the literal version. But it means something else, too. It's like… If you have 10 soldiers, say. They have average training and skills, but they all work together incredibly well. Then you have 10 soldiers who are all excellently trained, but work poorly together… The ones who work together will win." Freya smiled. "What good is being a supersoldier-
[03:39] <Freya‘Solheim> "If you’ve spent your life being trained to consider yourself as better than others, and thinks he can win by himself… If you're going to lose to the reasonable girl who realises she can't do this by herself?"
[03:42] <Yanmei> "Interesting. So it's a difference in attitude." Yanmei nodded. "I think I can understand that."
[03:45] * Freya‘Solheim nods cheerfully. "Sometimes, being normal is an incredible power."-
[03:46] <Freya`Solheim> They drive on. Yanmei can start to recognise familiar shapes… "Y’know, you're a fascinating girl, Yanyan."
[03:47] <Yanmei> "Hm? What makes you say that?" They were getting closer to home now, and finally, she smoothed down the hair that Freya had playfully ruffled before.
[03:48] <Freya‘Solheim> "Well. Apart from the fact that you’re one of the most powerful people to have ever existed-" She let that sink in for a moment. It was always very amusing to throw that at Sept every so often just for kicks- "It's… Interesting. Seeing how you act at school, I mean."
[03:54] <Yanmei> "Interesting? Well…" she smiled, deciding to take it as a complement. "Well, I do my best?" Most powerful… that made her a little depressed. Even though people kept telling them that, weren't three of them - four - six - possibly seven with Freya's training - just pawns of NERV when it was all said and done? What was real power like?
[03:56] <Freya‘Solheim> "Well." Freya peered over. "I mean… You’re popular and pretty, and from the presidential elections I can tell you're the sort of person who can fit in neatly into the top of the school hierarchy. And yet, you've gone and befriended someone like Gabriel-Wei, who the rest of the so-called top wouldn't be seen dead with."
[03:59] <Yanmei> "Oh, he's a good guy. Just needs a little confidence boost, that's all. Incidentally, there are a lot of other people who could stand to get cut down to size…"
[03:59] * Freya‘Solheim chuckles. "Oh yeah?"
[04:01] <Yanmei> "Yes. I’m holding out hope that someone will come along and do it someday." She smiled prettily.
[04:01] <Freya‘Solheim> "Now now. Don’t you be holding out on me. Share the goss, sweet Sister Violet~"
[04:03] <Yanmei> "There's none to speak of. Yet, anyway. But~ I promise that I will keep you posted on it."
[04:06] <Freya‘Solheim> "Hee. There’s a good girl." The terrain outside is starting to look very familiar- in fact, Yanmei's apartment building is only a minute away. "Supporting the little guy, cuttin' down the big… You're quite the populist, huh?"
[04:07] <Yanmei> "I never said that I would be doing the cutting, now did I?" She hoped she would keep a tight lid on it. No good having Windsor-Yamato and his ilk getting suspicious.
[04:09] <Freya‘Solheim> "Oh, of course." Freya winked. "I’ll pass on my well-wishes to Gabriel-Wei, then, regarding the cutting." The car came to a stop.
[04:09] * Yanmei climbed out. "I'll do just that! Thank you very much for the ride."
[04:10] * Freya‘Solheim held out her hand. "Five Francs, please~"
[04:12] <Yanmei> "I’ll buy you lunch sometime. We'll call it even?" she grinned.
[04:14] <Freya‘Solheim> "Hahahaha. I like it." Freya turned her hand into a wave. "Alright. You have a good day, alright, Yanyan?" She winked. "Think about what we said. Don’t let it get to you."
[04:15] <Yanmei> "Of course!" She smiled back. "Have a good day yourself. I'll see you at school!"
