Yui Confronted

[15:04] <Yanmei> Zhang Yanmei waited in ambush in a lonely dark parking lot. -
[15:07] <Yanmei> She'd folded her newspaper and set it aside in disappointment… the early morning light was way too dim to read by. Maybe she could deal with it later, after she'd gone back home and rested up. For now, she held back a yawn and kept a careful eye out for someone. Not even Marianne had made it in yet. -
[15:12] <Yanmei> This was the hour of the hardest of the hardcore workaholics. People who had stayed overnight to work on projects, or were actually coming in at this ungodly hour out of necessity. Either way, she counted herself lucky that being awake now was a rarity for her.
[15:21] <AdEvaGM> [She'd have to wait awhile, but eventually she'd be rewarded. The sound of an elevator. The clack-clack of footsteps…]
[15:25] * Yanmei swept out of the car, then, calmly locking it behind her, and moving toward the elevator with a smile.
[15:26] <AdEvaGM> [Yui Ikari was there, walking along, dressed in a thick coat and long woollen skirt, rubbing her hands. She was unused to Parisian cold.]
[15:32] <Yanmei> "Hello, Doctor~" Yanmei was dressed in one of her trendiest workout outfits, with a jacket worn over that. "You don't look too comfortable…"
[15:34] <AdEvaGM> ["It's cold." She muttered, shivering.]
[15:35] <Yanmei> "Sorry." Yanmei gave her an apologetic smile. "Let's go for a little walk? It'll warm you up. This way…"
[15:36] <AdEvaGM> [Yui followed on after Yanmei, rubbing her hands- which were wrapped up in thick black woollen mittens- briskly. "Couldn't we have met inside?"]
[15:43] <Yanmei> "I'll try to make it quick so that you can go back in. Here." A small corner of the parking lot with a dark, shadowy stairwell. Yanmei descended only partway, and then stopped and looked around. This should do it. -
[15:51] <Yanmei> "I wanted to talk to you about Eden Base."
[15:58] <AdEvaGM> [This didn't seem to improve Yui's mood at all. "Why?"]
[16:03] <Yanmei> "It's been bothering me for a while now, and the reminders keep piling up. Isabelle Bellamy being thrust back into the spotlight, Blanc's recent LCL adventure, Weis-Xylander's local efforts to find homes for the children from that place… You were a scientist there, right? So I thought that if anyone could provide information, it would be you."
[16:06] <AdEvaGM> [A grimace crossed Yui's face.-
[16:06] <AdEvaGM> ["Alright, what do you want?"]
[16:08] <Yanmei> "How did it happen? The EVAs didn't exist back then and Excalibur wasn't awake, so you must have used something else to perform those experiments."
[16:14] <AdEvaGM> ["We had the synchronisation technology." Said Yui quietly. "And we were granted one half of Lilith's soul to act as a base for synchronisation- the idea was if they could synch with it, they could synch with an Eva. To… To diminish them all we had to do was remove a few limiters and increase the rate of synchronisation."]
[16:20] <Yanmei> "…That doesn't make sense. The Marduk report was able to determine who could or couldn't be a successful pilot without resorting to such tests."
[16:23] <AdEvaGM> ["What?" Yui frowned at Yanmei. "The idea of the tests wasn't to determine successful pilots, it was to refine the synch technology and give us parameters on what to expect and how to design the Eva units."]
[15:16] <Yanmei> "Oh," she said, and was quiet a moment. "All those people… was that the sole reason?"
[15:18] <AdEvaGM> ["We wanted a large pool to see who had the greatest aptitude, physically, mentally- some people were better with AT Fields than others, others excelled at the martial arts. We needed a large pool of recruits- w-well, that was what we were told at first. You know what the true reason became."]
[15:29] <Yanmei> Did she know that she knew that? Yanmei folded her arms. Her face wasn't completely impassive, but it was calm. She'd allowed a little sadness to show as well. "So Lilith's soul was used to make that happen. I thought it was the Disciples, but I guess that was wrong?"
[15:30] <AdEvaGM> ["N… No. The Disciples were kept elsewhere."]
[15:35] <Yanmei> "With the rest of Lilith, right? Wherever that was…"
[15:36] <AdEvaGM> [Yui nodded mutely.]
[15:37] <Yanmei> "…" Yanmei sighed. "I'd like to level with you, Doctor. There's a reason why I picked this meeting spot."
[15:38] <AdEvaGM> ["W-Why?"]
[15:41] <Yanmei> "Section 2 doesn't leave very many blind spots in its video recordings. This is one of the precious few. Plus?" She peered over the railing at the rest of the stairwell, "The nearest mic is so far down that it won't pick up anything other than distorted noise unless we were yelling at the top of our lungs. Do you understand why I'm telling you this?"
[15:42] <AdEvaGM> ["… Please tell me."]
[15:47] <Yanmei> "Right now I'm not concerned with whatever it is your husband or Elisha Caine are planning. I'm just looking for information on the Human Instrumentality Committee. If they wanted to create a larger Gestalt Conciousness, what would they need? What signs should I be looking for?"
[15:47] <AdEvaGM> ["How large do you mean?"]
[15:50] <Yanmei> "I don't know," she admitted. "I can't answer that because I don't understand their true motivations. I'm just following along with their actions."
[15:53] <AdEvaGM> ["Then how do you expect me to give you an answer?" Muttered Yui. "In essence, creating a Gestalt Consciousness on a large scale is fundamentally the same as creating a small one. It's just a matter of organisation. It comes down to exposure to Lilith, in our experience. We had half of Lilith's soul, so it was weak and had to be actively connected to those it broke down. If you wanted a larger scale one you'd need Lilith's soul at progressively more powerful levels."]
[15:59] <Yanmei> "So larger fragments. Or the entire thing. That's all it takes?"
[16:00] <AdEvaGM> ["You'd need a way to control it, though. With half a soul we could control it because it couldn't do anything, but you would have just about zero way to control a fully rebuilt Lilith outside of stabbing it with the Lance of Longinus."]
[16:05] <Yanmei> "Has NERV developed such a method of controlling it?"
[16:06] <AdEvaGM> ["Not that I know."]
[16:14] * Yanmei studied her for a split second… and then withdrew, her eyes growing flat and disappointed. "I see. Well, thank you for humoring my questions. I did say I would make it quick out here, and I meant it."
[16:16] <AdEvaGM> ["That's really it?"]
[16:20] <Yanmei> "Well. There's one other thing. Call it my personal curiosity? But is the lifespan of an Ayanami pilot drastically short when compared to an average human being?"
[16:21] <AdEvaGM> ["What?" Yui stared at Yanmei, utterly flabbergasted. "That doesn't even make sense. They have a lifespan about thirty years beyond the average."]
[16:27] <Yanmei> "They do?" She seemed a little cheered now. "That's good to know. Any leads on where Lilith's soul is right now?"
[16:29] <AdEvaGM> ["The less people who knew where it is, the better."]
[16:30] <Yanmei> "Fair enough. Just tell me this: Did Mary Caine ever figure out what happened to it?"
[16:31] <AdEvaGM> ["Not that I know."]
[16:34] * Yanmei nodded. "Thank you, Doctor Ikari. This has been interesting." She started to pass her, ascending the stairwell again. "Please have a good day."
[16:34] <AdEvaGM> ["The same to you…"]
[16:37] * Yanmei went for the car again, keys out, suddenly tired again. She'd have to remember to tell James and Kaji not to use that spot again. And… well, now what was she going to do? -
[16:41] <Yanmei> She waited until she was shut inside securely again before making a small noise under her breath and gripping the steering wheel tightly. No welcome home gifts for her mother. Not yet, anyway…
