Yui S Seal

#6[13:41] * Aline lounged back in a chair, in a sort of compromise between an imperious and a relaxed posture, as she waited for her pending call to be received. It was the second scientist on her docket: Ikari Yui. She hoped she would be able to provide some telling evidence about the creation of the Ayanamis. Given the… vagaries of her personality, Aline wasn't entirely sure how Yui would react.
[13:41] * Aline This could be an Adventure.
[13:55] <Minaplo> [The call went unanswered for about thirty seconds, and then the 'PENDING CALL' sign, which hovered in the middle of the room, resolved, vanished, and was replaced by a holographic replica of Doctor Ikari.-
[13:56] <Minaplo> ["Doctor Ikari ans- oh, hello, Aline…"]
[13:58] * Aline folded her arms over her belly, and smiled. "…Before we begin, I want to warn you… this is sorta a business call. We can catch up later once I'm done with the business side of things, though~"
[14:01] <Minaplo> ["Fair enough."]
[14:02] * Aline drummed the fingers of her right hand. "…So. How much have you heard about what's happening with Rei? Ayanami Rei, mind you. This is about that matter."
[14:08] <Minaplo> ["…" Yui's face grew dark. "They have my baby up for court-martial. Ungrateful…"]
[14:11] * Aline drummed a bit more, and figured that lowering her smile a little was the appropriate gesture. "It's bad, but… well. I'm working with her defense, actually, and as an important figure in Project A2… you can contribute evidence crucial to our case."
[14:17] <Minaplo> ["… I see." A fey look crossed her face.]
[14:19] * Aline briefly quirked her brow. Adventurous indeed. "Yeah. We're trying to build, on the technical side, a case related to her conditioning, emotional makeup, and such similar facts."
[14:21] <Minaplo> ["Alright. What do you want to know?"]
[14:25] * Aline took a deep breath. "First and foremost, her conditioning, especially against strong emotions. I'm aware there was other conditioning that was formed, but the /important/ bit is the conditioning responsible for emotional control, including the conscious 'Ayanami Trick' of turning said emotions off."
[14:30] <Minaplo> ["We called it the Seal of Serenity."]
[14:32] * Aline took a moment to stare, as if processing the fact that they had a quasi-mythic name for it. Somehow, this surprised her, in spite of NERV's /everloving penchant/ for such things. "…It's breaking down."
[14:35] <Minaplo> [Yui nodded, slowly, as though not surprised.-
[14:36] <Minaplo> ["I'm not surprised."]
[14:41] * Aline nodded back, at similar speed. "Mm. Well, that breakdown is pretty vital to our case, because the Seal of Serenity unfortunately prevented her from developing normal coping mechanisms in time."#
#1[14:46] <Minaplo> ["Mm… That's your angle. I think I understand."]#
#6[15:03] * Aline nodded. "There /are/ more angles than just that one - like her condition at the time, emotional stress… it's just, /this/ one is the one you can help the most with."
[15:03] <Minaplo> ["What details do you need?"]
[15:08] <Aline> "The structure and creation of the Seal of Serenity, its limitations and other specifications /when active/… Hm." Aline lifted a hand to scratch her chin. "Possibly, if you can spare it, some cursory documentation on the other conditioning? I'm not sure if /that/ will be needed, but it's possible it could help. Aaaand maybe, any documentation from the project about its possible breakdown.
[15:08] <Aline> If there's no official papers on /that/, then I can deal."
[15:20] <Minaplo> ["I can provide you with the documentation you need. On the Seal, on the other conditioning in general, and theories on conditioning breakdown."-#
#1[15:21] <Minaplo> ["Do you want me to explain it now?"]
[15:22] * Aline tilted her head this way and that, looking contemplative. "Maybe just a summary? The full documentation is probably going to be relatively large." She paused for a second. "Thank you for doing this, by the way."
[15:23] <Minaplo> ["I'd do anything for one of my children." She said firmly.]
[15:25] <Aline> "I can understand the sentiment? Some, I don't have…" …Well excluding technical genetic… "Er, I don't have children of my own, but I can see how you'd have such drive."
[15:31] <Minaplo> [Yui nodded slowly.-
[15:39] <Minaplo> ["The Seal relies on deeply-embedded subconscious thought patterns that are triggered through self-hypnotic suggestion, either automatically or manually. The Seal is triggered automatically as a nervous reaction to intense mental activity in several parts of the brain that relate to the regulation of emotion. So if an Ayanami feels extreme emotions, such as fear, the Seal triggers. The Seal can be activated manually through the use of a specific codeword said in the right tone."-
[15:44] <Minaplo> ["What the Seal does is manually alters the signals being sent to those parts of the brain, compensating by activating the parts of the brain associated with logic and memory. Anger, fear- other emotions that might adversely affect an Ayanami's combat performance- were the main emotions we wanted to seal, but considering the interconnectedness of the brain, it triggers in other emotional situations as well, although the effect might be diminished."-
[15:45] <Minaplo> ["Our tests show the Seal can be resisted, but it requires intense mental effort on the part of the Ayanami."-
[15:46] <Minaplo> ["The Seal has some side effects. Ayanamis who trigger their Seals can find the effect lingering for some time, their emotions in general damped for days, if not completely cancelled. In a few cases its backfired and triggered depressive symptoms as well, which fade after one to two days."]
[15:53] * Aline was nodding her head every few sentences or so, and seemed to be mentally recording from how she was tip-tapping her hands rhythmically. "…Rather extensive. So essentially, it can mute emotions for a good long while, it can trigger automatically or manually… automatic triggering and powerful effects could possibly engender dependancy?"
[15:54] <Minaplo> ["The emotional threshold is quite high, so the Ayanamis would still feel emotion on a day-to-day basis, but if you removed the Seal permanently, then they would most likely have trouble coping with high degrees of fear and anger."]
[15:59] <Aline> "Absolutely. We've found evidence of such, yeah." Aline said in a weird clinic-casual tone. "This helps a lot."
[16:01] <Minaplo> [Yui nodded. "Good."]
[16:07] * Aline looked a bit out-of-sorts. "Hm… I think I get the idea. Did you want to just wire over the rest and have a talk?"
[16:09] <Minaplo> ["That would be nice, I think…" Said Yui, the fire starting to leave her. She was becoming quieter, more dormant.]
[16:12] * Aline tapped her chin again. "…Unfortunately I can't think of much recent to talk about that isn't bad news…"
[14:20] <Minaplo> ["No, I… Don't suppose there is much to tell." Said Yui quietly. "You no doubt have a lot to deal with besides just this case."]
[14:21] * Aline sighed rather softly, trying to hide it but not completely. "…Yeah. The coming fight, for example."
[14:22] <Minaplo> ["How are you feeling about it?"]
[14:26] <Aline> "Well, it's like… we're in a dire straight now. It's the last chance we'll get, and there's all sorts of trouble. This one's been very hard to deal with."
[14:31] <Minaplo> ["Yes. Do you have any ideas on how to counter him?"]
[14:38] * Aline had thought about that for a while. "I'm thinking of combining some of my own strategies with what the Boston crew tried - namely, getting a bigger gun for the latter - and then trying to use AT field mechanics to defend us better from his assaults. Things like probability control fields and maybe force nullification. I could also try strategic movement if it comes to that."
[14:42] <Minaplo> ["Decisive attack, extended defense?"]
[14:45] * Aline nodded her head rather quickly. "Yes. I don't quite know if the other pilots involved have their own ideas, but… defense seems to be one of our larger weaknesses against him."
[14:46] <Minaplo> ["I'm sure Colonel Amatore will organise something more unified."]
[14:49] <Aline> "Oh, I don't doubt that." Aline added, thinking. "With a bit of luck, we'll have a working strategy."
[14:50] <Minaplo> ["I see. That's good news." Said Yui quietly. She didn't say anything else- an awkward silence was about to ensue.]
[14:57] * Aline tilted her head left and right. "I assume you've been fairly busy?"
[15:01] <Minaplo> ["I have, yes. Technical wasn't too disturbed by the sudden disappearance of Commander Fontaine, so…"]
[15:09] * Aline scratched her chin again at that. Right. Disappearances. "Ahhh. I suppose that's fair enough. And I also suppose that's one of the few truly interesting things that's been happening."
[15:13] <Minaplo> ["Interesting is one way to put it. It worries me…"]
[15:15] * Aline gave a little pout at that. "…I imagine so. There's been a number of things like that happening, after all. Well, not literally disappearances, but… I dunno how to put. Nebulous odd activities with people."
[15:18] <Minaplo> ["Ah?"]
[15:20] * Aline shakes her head. "I don't know tons about it, but I'd count all the stuff Yanmei's been through, all the stuff Sera's been through, as part of a similar category. And there's probably been more people dropping off the proverbial face of the Earth."
[15:34] <Minaplo> ["Mmm, so it would seem…"]
[15:38] * Aline knew that in a way she was dancing around the real issue - in part because this was a holocall and she didn't trust the security of the line OR the security in Yui's room. But… "Well, nonetheless, at least you and me are fine. Albeit I know I kinda… had to push to be fine."
[15:43] <Minaplo> ["That's something a lot of us have had to do recently…"]
[15:54] * Aline flattened her expression. "Oh definitely. But… at least the end is near, one way or another. I suppose that's not the most heartening of phrases to hear, but it means this war is going to be over sooner or later. We only have Michael and Metatron, of Angels."
[15:54] <Minaplo> ["Mm. And once they're dealt with, only the last enemy of Man- Man itself- remains…"]
[15:56] * Aline nodded again, sighing. "A pity. But I guess what'll be done is what'll be done."
[16:03] <Minaplo> ["Y… Yes." Yui looked a little tired.-
[16:03] <Minaplo> ["I should probably go."]
[16:12] * Aline nodded slowly. "It's probably for the best that you do, yes." Aline started to reach for controls on the display system, but decided she'd let Yui cut the call. "Be well."
[16:13] <Minaplo> ["Y… You too. Say hello to Shinji for me."-
[16:13] <Minaplo> [And with that, the holographic Yui flickered away.]
[16:14] * Aline reclined back in the chair she was sitting in. She had… maybe with the data Yui sent, she might be actually done on her side of things for the case. Until the actual moment of truth, anyway.
